LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Seniors Nicholas Delaneuville (baseball) and Haley Miller (softball), juniors Edvard Granrud (Gents golf) and Jessie Varner (Ladies golf), and sophomore Max Wamsley (Gents tennis) were named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Team for their respective sports.
The SCAC places a special emphasis on sportsmanship each year and is asking all fans of the conference to exhibit good sportsmanship at all conference functions. Read the SCAC Presidents' Council statement on Fan Sportsmanship.
Delaneuville played in 22 games for the Diamond Gents this season with 16 starts. He finished the season 10-for-48 from the plate with seven RBIs, seven runs scored, and a double. Starting 15-straight games in the middle of the season, mostly at second base, Delaneuville recorded 37 assists and 20 putouts with no errors.
His lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth against Southwestern April 7 proved to be the winning run in the Gents 6-5 win.
Miller played in 23 games with 10 starts for Ladies softball. She also appeared in the circle in four games, picking up a win in her longest outing of the season against LeTourneau April 11. In relief, Miller allowed four hits and two runs in 3.1 innings in Centenary's 11-6 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the YellowJackets.
Granrud participated in six tournaments for the Gents Golf team with his best finish coming March 19-20 at the annual Hal Sutton Invite. In the tournament, he shot a 168 (+24) to finish 20th. His best three-round total came at the Pinecrest Intercollegiate hosted by LeTourneau March 12-13. In the second round of the first day, he fired a season-best 75 (+3) en route to a 250 (+24) to finish 46th.
"Edvard is a low-key, all-around great student-athlete that I never have to worry about him doing the right things," said Ladies and Gents Golf Coach Emlyn Aubrey. "He puts in 100 percent in both the classroom and the golf course, so he is as easy as it gets from a coach's perspective. He has played in every tournament for us since day one, and I see his senior year shaping up to be his best."
Varner was named to the WGCA West All-Region Team for 2017-18. She captured four titles and seven top-5 finishes in the nine tournaments of competition – including beginning the season with two straight wins. She turned in her best collegiate score to par (147, +3) to win the UT Tyler Al Jones Memorial on September 25-26, 2017. In claiming victory for the second-consecutive season in the tournament, Varner fired her lowest collegiate round (72, even) on the second day.
Varner also finished third at the 2018 SCAC Championships with a 157 (+13) total to earn First Team All-Conference accolades for the third consecutive season. For the season, Varner was named SCAC Women's Golfer of the Week after all four wins.
"Jessica is a leader, motivator, comedienne, model student, and a hard worker who lives life to the fullest," said Aubrey. "She simply loves life and all the things it throws at her. It's been a privilege and blessing to be associated with the many successes Jessica has accomplished here at Centenary."
Finally, Wamsley finished 5-9 for the Gents Tennis team. He ended the season on a three-match winning streak, including a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins. On April 11 against the University of the Ozarks at sixth singles, he split the first two sets with Kade Cushing. He won the finale set to cap the 10-5 for the win.
"Max is a true leader and someone I could truly count on," said head coach Tom Jackson. "As a new coach, he was really a person that I leaned on, and he is a true student-athlete. He is an honor to coach."
