60 Ladies and Gents Student-Athletes Named to the SCAC Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference named 60 Centenary winter and spring student-athletes to the conference's Academic Honor Roll following the spring 2018 semester.

"We applaud all of the Ladies and Gents who received academic recognition this past season," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Bob Bunnell. "The time constraints on student-athletes, especially in-season, are tremendous. For 92 Centenary athletes to achieve this distinction is remarkable."

Combined with 19 Ladies and Gents who received All-Conference academic accolades in the fall and 13 gymnasts who were named Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Scholar Athletes, 42 percent of Centenary student-athletes received academic conference acknowledgement for the 2017-18 year.

In addition, 26 student-athletes received a 4.0 GPA (six among soccer and volleyball in the fall; 20 among basketball, gymnastics, golf, baseball, softball, and tennis in the spring).

Six teams saw at least half of their roster receive academic honors by the SCAC or MIC, including the entire roster of the Ladies swimming team. Seventy-five percent (12-16) of gymnastics received academic recognition by the MIC, while 50 percent of Gents swimming (7-14), Gents tennis (4-8), Ladies golf (3-6), and Gents golf (5-10) garnered academic accolades from the SCAC.

Four individuals honored for their academics received athletic All-American recognition. For gymnastics, juniors Navia Jordan (floor) and Tavia Smith (all-around) were crowned First Team All-Americans at the USA Gymnastics Championships, while freshman Sierra Ponder (bars) finished Second Team. Softball senior Anna Dunn received All-American honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Nine Ladies and Gents athletes received all-conference accolades both athletically and academically for 2017-18. Junior Cameron Guin and senior Kaleb Kirk from baseball, junior Jessica Varner from women's golf, junior Margeaux Smith and senior Anna Dunn from softball, and junior Savanah Doty from Ladies basketball. In addition, seniors Anthony McDonald and Roberto Roig-Perez of Gents swimming finished all-conference as members of the 400 medley relay team at the 2018 SCAC Swimming Championships. Smith was named to the MIC Scholar List and finished All-Conference in the all-around.

In the fall, senior Riley Spudic of Ladies soccer received both athletic and academic all-conference recognition.

To receive academic all-conference recognition from either the SCAC or MIC, Centenary student-athletes had to achieve a minimum of a 3.25 on a 4.0 scale during their semester of competition.
