Key Error Lifts Whitworth past Centenary, 3-0

TYLER, Texas - Both teams stood scoreless through five innings, but a key error and two-out rally by the Pirates in the sixth proved to be the difference as Centenary (6-2) fell to Whitworth (5-6) Saturday night at UT Tyler.

Centenary managed five hits, but no player advanced past second base. Both senior Ian Graham and sophomore Cody Crowder managed a pair of hits. Sophomore Matthew Devillier (1-1) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs and five hits with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.

Whitworth scored three unearned runs in the sixth for the win. With two outs and no one on, the Pirates hit a pair of singles. However, a Gents error allowed a runner to score and moved two runners into scoring position. A Spencer Locati single plated two more runs for the final three-run margin.

Hugh Smith (1-0) picked up the win, allowing three hits and striking out nine in five innings of word. T.J. Orchard threw the final four innings, allowing two hits and striking out a pair for his first save of the season.

Centenary closes out the weekend Sunday, February 18, when it takes on UT Tyler. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
