Wild Sixth Inning Drops Diamond Gents against Millsaps, 10-7

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Diamond Gents were able to cut a six-run deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth, but the Majors five-run top of the inning held firm as Centenary (12-14-1) fell to Millsaps (5-18) 10-7 Wednesday night, March 27.

Trailing 10-4 with one out in the bottom of the sixth, senior Cameron Guin doubled and swiped third when freshman Brandon Griffin walked. Griffin stole second to put two men into scoring position, and a passed ball cut the deficit to five. With two outs, senior Andrew Russell singled in Griffin and then stole second. Sophomore Chris Haggard capped the three-run inning with a single to drive in Russell.

Centenary trailed 1-0 before a three-run second put them in the lead. With one out, Griffin and Guin singled to put men on the corners. Freshman Shane Salzman added an RBI groundout to tie the game at one. An error plated another run and allowed Russell to take second. A steal and error scored Russell and put the Diamond Gents up 3-1.

Haggard and Ludwick both scored a pair of runs and added an RBI. Guin also had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Freshman Dawson Crosby took the loss, allowing two hits and four unearned runs in 2.1 innings of work.

Holding on to a slim 5-4 lead, Millsaps blew the game open with a five-run sixth. Alan Merkle began the inning with an infield single before Jimmy Johnstone walked and Brennan Ducote singled to load the bases. Mason Little doubled in a pair of runs before an infield single by Jimmy Fondren scored the third run. After a double steal, a sacrifice fly by Keaton Page and an RBI single by Nathan Chilton pushed the deficit for the Gents to six runs.

Ryan Erwin picked up the win in relief for Millsaps, allowing one hit in two innings of work.

Centenary returns to action this weekend when it travels to San Antonio for a three-game series against third-ranked Trinity. First pitch of the series is set for 7 p.m. Friday night, March 29.
