Baseball Splits DH With Schreiner On Friday

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary baseball team earned a doubleheader split with the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, winning game one by a score of 11-7 and falling 7-5 in game two at Bob Henry Field.

The Diamond Gents (11-10, 6-2 SCAC) earned a series win following a 7-0 victory in the opener on Thursday. The Mountaineers (8-18, 3-5 SCAC) avoided the sweep and snapped Centenary's five-game winning streak and are now 4-8 at home while the Diamond Gents are 7-6 on the road.

Game one recap: Centenary 11 Schreiner 7

Centenary outslugged Schreiner as the Maroon and White pounded out 16 hits, their second-most in a game this season, and reaching double digits for the eighth time. The Diamond Gents drew six walks, struck out three times, did not commit an error and left 11 on base. Schreiner had 15 hits, walked once, struck out six times, made one error, and left eight on base.

Junior LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) started on the mound for the Diamond Gents and did not receive a decision as he went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, and six hits with no walks and one strikeout. He faced 15 batters and gave way to junior P Zachary Malone (Hallsville, Texas) who picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the season as he worked 2.2 innings, facing 13 batters, and allowed three runs (all earned) and four hits with one BB and three K's.

Sophomore RHP Aidan Reichek (Bellaire, Texas) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits with no BB or K, senior P Hank Bennett (Richmond, Texas) faced one batter and retired him and sophomore RHP Jacob Broussard (Houston, Texas) pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run on two hits with a pair of K's.

Trey Bennett (1-3) started and was charged with the loss for the Mountaineers as he was tagged for seven runs, six earned, and eight hits in four innings of work with two BB and no K's. Luke Rogers relieved him and went two innings as he allowed three runs, all earned, and five hits with one BB and no K's. Two final Schreiner pitchers covered the last three innings and allowed one earned run and three hits with three BB and three K's.

Sophomore LF Carson Livesay (Lafayette, La.) and senior SS Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) led the way on offense as they each had three hits and were a combined 6-7 with three RBI, four runs scored, three walks, and two stolen bases. Freshman 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) went 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and freshman DH Walker Wicklund (Shreveport, La.) finished 2-3 with a sacrifice fly and two RBI.

Sophomore 3B Clay Menard (Berwick, La.) finished 0-3 but had two RBI, walked twice, and scored a run. Senior RF Austyn Benoit (Welsh, La.) was 2-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored and senior C Jake Gonce (Katy, Texas) and sophomore CF Collin Pitts (Lufkin, Texas) went a combined 2-9 with an RBI, a BB, and a run scored. Freshman Miles Keith (Lindale, Texas) was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Five Mountaineers recorded multi-hit games as CF Aiden Warren was 4-4 at the top of the order with two RBI, three runs scored, a walk, a stolen base, and had a double and a triple. RF Tyler Juarez was 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored with two doubles and 2B AJ Rodriguez was 3-5 with an RBI triple. DH Isaiah Hernandez was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored and LF Seth Joseph finished 3-4 with two runs scored.

Menard's RBI groundout in the top of the first gave Centenary a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and Warren scored on a wild pitch by Herrera in the bottom half to tie the game. Warren's RBI triple in the third scored Joseph for a 2-1 lead in the third but the Diamond Gents scored the next six runs of the game over the next two innings to take a 7-2 lead.

Wicklund's sac fly in the fourth tied the game and an RBI for Menard on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth made it 3-2 Centenary. Miller ripped a two-run single later in the inning, Boone had an RBI single, and Wicklund capped the scoring with an RBI single. Warren came though again for Schreiner in the fifth as he brought Joseph home with an RBI single to make it 7-3. Juarez then doubled home Warren to make it 7-4.

Benoit's RBI ground out in the sixth extended the Centenary lead to 8-4 and a two-RBI single by Boone later that inning scored Miller and Livesay for a 10-4 lead. Juarez had an RBI double in the seventh followed by an RBI single from Hernandez and later an RBI triple by Rodriguez to make it 10-7. Pitts' RBI single scored Boone in the eighth for the final run of the game to make it 11-7. Broussard stranded a pair of runners in the eighth and retired Schreiner in order in the ninth to seal the win.

The Mountaineers earned the split of the DH with their game two win, pounding out 13 hits to finish with 28 for the day and overcoming a 5-4 deficit late in the game. Centenary had 11 hits to finish with 27 in the two games but gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh to fall by two runs.

Schreiner overcame a whopping six errors to win as reliever Daniel Garza (2-2) worked the final 2.1 innings for an impressive save as he blanked the Diamond Gents on two hits with one BB and three K's. Starting pitcher Nolan Sauceda lasted 6.2 innings and allowed five runs, all earned, on nine hits with one BB and no K's. he faced 29 batters and hit one while throwing one wild pitch.

Senior P Blaine Hardy (Shreveport, La.) started for the Diamond Gents and went six innings as he allowed four runs, all earned, and nine hits with one BB and one K. He faced 27 batters, hitting one, and threw a pair of wild pitches. Sophomore Will Riley (Baton Rouge, La.) came in for Hardy and faced three batters as he allowed two runs, both earned, on one hit in 0.1 innings of work.

Senior P Hank Bennett (Richmond, Texas) was charged with the loss as he faced two batters and allowed one hit and one earned run with a BB. Reichek pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed just two hits with one K of the seven batters he faced.

Schreiner scored a pair of runs in the first as 1B Gerardo Cardoza reached on a fielder's choice and Hernandez doubled him home for a 2-0 lead. Keith doubled home Gonce in the third to get the Diamond Gents on the board and a throwing error by Rodriguez at second allowed Livesay to score and tie the game. Cardoza's RBI single scored Warren in the third for a 3-2 lead and Joseph's RBI single made it 4-2 in the fourth.

Two scoreless innings followed until Livesay tripled off of Sauceda with one out in the seventh to score a pair and give the Diamond Gents a 5-4 lead. Bennett inherited trouble in the seventh when he came in for Riley and Hernandez got him for a two-run single to make it 6-5 and Sanchez followed with an RBI single off of Reichek to make it 7-5 but the run was charged to Bennett.

Centenary had the potential tying runs on base in the eighth as Wicklund and Boone reached base and executed a double steal with one out to put runners at second and third but Garza struck out Pitts and Gone to end the threat. In the ninth, Livesay singled with one out and Menard followed with a walk but again Garza escaped trouble as he struck out Miller and got Benoit to fly out to end the game.

Centenary returns home next weekend to face the Southwestern University Pirates in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m.
