Ladies Gymnastics Earns Big Win against Gustavus Adolphus

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies Gymnastics team continued its trend of improving its team score in every meet this season. In the penultimate home regular season meet of the season Sunday afternoon, February 3, Centenary bested Gustavus Adolphus 190.375-182.725.

Junior Cami Bea Austin paced the Ladies with wins on both vault (9.725) and beam (9.675) and taking second on floor, matching a career high with a 9.800. Senior Tavia Smith took the all-around title with a 38.050 – breaking 38 for the first time in 2019 – and tied sophomore teammate Sierra Ponder on bars (9.625). Senior Navia Jordan took the floor title for the second time this weekend, finishing with a 9.825.

Freshman Kendall Sanders took runner-up honors in the all-around with a 37.525.

After the first five performers for the Ladies fell between 9.325 and 9.450 on vault, Austin went big on vault for the second straight meet. She received a 9.725 to win the event by more than two tenths. Combined with a 9.775 on vault on Friday, it was the first time Austin went above 9.650 on the apparatus in her collegiate career.

Centenary claimed the win on vault, 47.300-46.950.

The Ladies ended bars strong to edge the Golden Gusties on the event, 47.050-45.825. The final two performers, Ponder and Smith, both finished with a season high 9.625 to win the event. Freshman Xian Baumgartner took third on bars with a 9.600.

On beam, the Ladies hit the first five routines to finish with their second best team score of the season (47.775). Sanders set the tone for Centenary, leading off with a 9.525 to finish third on beam. After sophomore Jerrica Harris' 9.500, senior Elizabeth Sander briefly took the lead with a 9.600. Smith went 9.475 in the fourth position before Austin took the beam crown with a 9.675.

Gustavus Adolphus finished with a 43.225 on beam.

In the final rotation, Centenary surpassed 48 on floor for the second straight meet, finishing with a 48.325 total. Sander led off with a 9.525, while sophomore Jenny Jackson received a 9.275. Sanders and Smith went 9.600 and 9.500, respectively, before the Ladies ended the event in a big way. Austin briefly took the lead with a 9.800 before Jordan took the floor crown with a 9.825. The visitors finished with a 46.725 total on the event.

Gustavus Adolphus was led by Amanda Malo, who took second on vault (9.475) and third on both floor (9.650) and in the all-around (37.025). The Golden Gusties team total for the meet was its highest of the season.

Centenary takes the next three weeks off before returning to action Sunday, February 24, at Lindenwood.
