Huge Comeback Falls Short for Gents Basketball at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas – The Gents were able to cut a 20-point deficit to four with about two minutes left in the game, but the 'Roos were able to hold on to a lead the entire contest as Centenary (7-10, 4-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Austin College (7-10, 4-4 SCAC) 76-68 Tuesday night, January 22.

The Gents trailed 60-40 and 64-47 with 6:40 left before an 18-5 run cut the deficit to four. Junior Jericho Gray made a layup, and off of a 'Roos turnover, senior Treylan Matthews made a layup while being fouled. He made the free throw and then a layup to cut the deficit to four. After a stop, junior Cedric Harris brought the Gents within 10 with a tip-in.

After another stop, Matthews made a traditional three to cut the deficit to single digits for the first time since the 5:19 mark in the first half. After an Austin College jumper, Gray completed an old-fashioned three-point play. Both teams traded threes before a freshman Ty Prince layup cut the deficit to four with 1:43 left. However, the Gents could come no closer.

Gray and Matthews each led Centenary with 17 points each, while Prince added the double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Centenary could not overcome an 8-for-34 (23.5 percent) mark from the field in the first half and trailed 38-22 at the intermission.

Austin College held a slim 18-16 lead before scoring 15 straight to lead by double digits, holding the Gents without a field goal for eight minutes. Kam Hogan hit a pair of free throws before a Kameron Hill three. Devin Roland made a three and a layup before Michael Holland added a layup. Roland capped the run with a three as Austin College led 33-16 with 3:39 left in the first half.

Roland led the home team with 26 while Hill added 19.

Centenary returns to action Sunday, January 27, when it hosts Schreiner. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
