Matthews Grabs Centenary, SCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – You could not write a better script for senior Gents Basketball Player Treylan Matthews in three games during Senior Week. Coming off an easy career high in his penultimate contest in the Gold Dome and a spectacular second half that helped Centenary rally from a double-digit deficit in his final game in the Dome, Matthews grabbed SCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.

Matthews also grabbed Centenary Athlete of the Week on Monday, February 11.

After 18 points in the Gents 57-52 win to complete the regular season sweep of Dallas on Tuesday, Matthews went for a big career high as Centenary completed the season sweep of Colorado College. He finished the game 10-for-19 from the field for 34 points - seven clear of his previous collegiate high. He also added five rebounds and four steals as the Gents held on for the 66-62 win.

However, with the Gents down 12 in the second half to Johnson & Wales on senior day Saturday, he scored 13 of his 19 points in the period by going 4-for-5 from the field. With less than two miniutes left, Matthews buried a three for the first tie of the game. After a defensive stand and a Centenary offensive board, Matthews held the ball near halfcourt before the drive and pullup inside the arc. He buried the jumper with 1.6 seconds left. Johnson & Wales desperation heave hit hard off the backboard as the Gents claimed the 61-59 win.

For the week, Matthews went 22-for-44 from the field - including 10-for-18 from behind the arc. He also improved to 16.3 points per game for the season, which ranks sixth right behind junior teammate Cedric Harris in the SCAC.

The Gents, who clinched no worse than the fourth seed in the SCAC Tournament, return to action next weekend deep in the heart of Texas. The Gents take on Southwestern on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before finishing the weekend Sunday at SCAC leading Texas Lutheran. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
