Gents Soccer and Louisiana College Fight to Draw

PINEVILLE, La. – Centenary (1-10-2) and Louisiana College (2-8-1) fought to a scoreless draw Tuesday night, October 2.

After Louisiana College struck first, the Gents scored three unanswered to take a two-goal lead. Tied at one, sophomore Matthew Young scored shortly before half on a pass in the box from junior Gabe Rodriguez. Young then put the Gents up two in the 68th off a cross from senior Dillon Rogers that was tapped in, but Louisiana College cut the deficit in half just 12 seconds later.

In the 71st minute, Jason Rodriguez scored to tie the game for Louisiana College. Both teams played scoreless soccer for the next 39 minutes.

Freshman Cole Mrozek led Centenary with four shots, two of which were on target. Classmate Patrick Riley, in his first collegiate start, grabbed five saves in eight shots faced. Michael Brown III recorded four saves in seven shots faced for the game for the home team.

In a display of sportsmanship, both teams scored their first goal of the game in the fourth minute. According to the Louisiana College web site: "LC took the lead in the fourth minute, but it was by mistake. Centenary kicked the ball out for an injury timeout. Restarting play, Alexie Nava scored off Brandon Martinez's throw-in. The goal was not to supposed to happen, as a sign of respect, (freshman) Ali Ibrahim scored to level the game for the mistake."

Centenary returns to action Friday night, October 5, when it hosts Southwestern. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
