Late Goal Earns Gents A Tie With McMurry

Shreveport– The Centenary men's soccer team received a late goal from junior F Ron Masti (Houston, Texas) to earn a 1-1 tie with the McMurry University War Hawks on Sunday afternoon in its home opener at Mayo Field.

The Gents (0-1-1) shook off a disappointing season-opening loss to Ozarks on Friday while the War Hawks fell to 1-0-1. McMurry scored first as Dylan Claudie was fouled inside the box and converted on a penalty kick in the 21^st minute for a 1-0 lead. Centenary and McMurry finished in a tie for the second-consecutive season after they tied 3-3 tie last September in Irving, Texas.

The McMurry defense held the Gents scoreless until Masti found the net off an assist from freshman D Hayden McConnell (Flower Mound, Texas) in the 81^st minute. The goal is Masti's first this season and seventh of his career.

The War Hawks took 18 shots to 14 for the Gents and four corner kicks while the Gents took just one. The teams combined to be called for 30 fouls – 17 by the Gents and 13 by the visitors. Centenary played a pair of goalies on Sunday as junior Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) started and played the first half. He allowed the War Hawks' goal and made five saves. Junior Casey Clemo (Forney, Texas) played the second half and made a pair of saves. Griffin Cardwell played all 90 minutes for McMurry and made four saves.

Centenary returns to the field on Friday night as the Maroon and White welcome the Mississippi University for Women Owls to Mayo Field for a non-conference match set for 8 p.m.
