Gents Swimming Knocks off Hendrix, Ladies Tie Warriors, in Tri-Meet with Colorado College

SHREVEPORT, La. – It was quite the first impression this weekend for freshman Miguel Vasquez.

Coming off a pair of wins Friday night, Vasquez claimed titles in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke to help Gents Swimming split a tri-meet with Hendrix and Colorado College Saturday afternoon, October 20. The Gents beat the Warriors, 106-90, but fell to the Tigers 124-72.

For the Ladies, freshman Madelyn Frederick won the 50 freestyle for the second time in as many days. The Ladies tied Hendrix, 95-95, but fell to the Tigers, 118-74.

Frederick claimed the first individual win for Centenary Swimming for the second straight meet in a close finish. She improved her time 0.12 seconds from Friday night, touching the wall in 26.25 – 0.02 seconds faster than the runner-up.

Vasquez, who just out-touched his opponent last night in the 200 butterfly and as a member of the 400 medley relay team, left nothing in doubt on Saturday. He claimed the title in the 200 IM by more than three seconds with a time of 2:01.05. He also triumphed in the 100 backstroke by more than three seconds, touching the was in 54.00 – just 0.65 seconds off of the top-10 list in program history.

On the women's side, freshman Brianna Serret claimed an event win for the second straight meet. She started the Centenary sweep in the 100 backstroke, winning by more than two seconds with a time of 1:03.54. Vasquez quickly followed to complete the sweep.

Freshman Kaylin Swoboda made sure her first collegiate win etched her name in the Centenary record books. Swoboda took the 100 breaststroke title in 1:11.24, the eighth fastest time in the event in school history.

The Ladies added a 200 freestyle relay title to end the meet and force a tie with the Warriors. Frederick, Serret, and Swoboda teamed up with freshman Lindsay Strohm to win the event by more than two seconds with a time of 1:44.53.

The Centenary swimming teams take more than two weeks off before competing in the annual Hendrix Relays and Hendrix Classic November 2-3.
