Sixth-Inning Rally Drops Ladies Softball in Season Opener at East Texas Baptist

MARSHALL, Texas – The Ladies Softball team used a key two-out RBI to take the lead in the first, but an unearned run in the third and a two-out rally in the sixth gave the Tigers the victory as Centenary (0-1) fell to East Texas Baptist (1-0) 4-1 Monday night, February 4.

With two outs in the first and junior Haley Campbell at second, senior Wendy Gillet singled in the first run of the season to give Centenary a 1-0 lead.

After the Tigers tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the third, Centenary was able to pitch out of jams in the fourth and fifth. After the first two Tigers reached in the fourth, senior Amberlee Nix was relieved by classmate Nichole Aldridge. Both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but Aldridge produced a key strikeout for a critical second out. A hit by pitch loaded the bases, but Aldridge got a flyout to end the East Texas Baptist threat.

In the bottom of the fifth, a single and an error put two Tigers on with one out. However, two groundouts to third base ended the inning.

However, the home team took the lead in the sixth thanks to a two-out home run by MacKenzie Anderson off of Aldridge. A double and single added an insurance run for the Tigers.

Centenary brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.

Aldridge (0-1) took the loss for the Ladies, allowing four hits and three runs in 2.2 innings pitched. Nix also gave up four hits, but surrendered only an unearned run, in three innings of work.

Beatriz Lara (1-0) picked up the complete game win, allowing just two hits and one run with five walks and 12 strikeouts.

Centenary returns to action on Sunday, February 10, against Millsaps. The doubleheader begins at noon and will be played at Bossier Parish Community College.
