Ladies Softball Takes Doubleheader from Austin College to Close Out Weekend Sweep

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies started undefeated in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, finishing off a four-game sweep of the 'Roos with a 6-0 win in game one, followed by a Centenary (7-10, 4-0 SCAC) 7-3 win against Austin College (0-19, 0-8 SCAC) Sunday afternoon, March 17.

In game one, senior Nichole Aldridge (2-3) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only five hits while striking out eight.

For the first time all series in game one, Centenary struck first off Austin College. Senior Peyton LeBlanc singled and scored on sophomore Becca McGough's triple. McGough later scored on a wild pitch. In the second, junior Haley Campbell singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Ladies capped the scoring in the fifth. After a solo home run by senior Sydney Hurley, her second of the weekend, senior Cassie Gonzales walked and scored on Campbell's RBI double. Campbell crossed the plate on LeBlanc's sacrifice fly.

Campbell finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while LeBlanc added two hits in as many at-bats with a run scored and RBI.

Jaide Vidal added a pair of hits for Austin College. Taylor Groover (0-9) took the complete game loss, allowing six runs and 10 hits on six innings.

In game two, Centenary ran out to a 7-1 lead and won by four. Hurley went 3-for-3, including a pair of two-RBI doubles. In the first with two outs, sophomore Erin Lewis singled and senior Wendy Gillet walked before Hurley's double plated both.

After a squeeze bunt by sophomore Erin Lewis plated a run in the third, Campbell cleared the bases with a double to the gap in the fourth after Hurley and Gonzales singled.

Hurley added a two-out double to plate a pair in the fifth for the Ladies final runs of the game.

Senior Amberlee Nix (2-5) picked up the win, allowing one run and four hits in four innings of work.

Austin College scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before plating two in the seventh. After loading the bases off of freshman Hannah Scoggins with no outs in the seventh, the Ladies got an out at home and first for the ground ball double play. Ashley Mayorga added a two-RBI single to right center to score a pair, but a groundout ended the weekend.

Mayorga led Austin College offensively with three hits and two RBIs. Jordan Proctor (0-8) took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs (six earned) in six innings of work.

Centenary returns to action for its first road conference action next weekend, March 23-24. The Ladies take on Dallas for a pair of doubleheaders. Both day's action begins at noon.
