Ladies Softball Move Above .500 with Second SCAC Series Sweep of Season

IRVING, Texas – The Ladies Softball team completed their second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference sweep in as many series as Centenary (11-10, 8-0 SCAC) took four from Dallas (5-21, 0-12), 9-2 and 3-1 Saturday, March 23, and 9-2 and 10-1 Sunday, March 24.

 

Game 1

Down 1-0 early, the Ladies took the lead for good with two in the third and three in the fourth. Seniors Margeaux Smith and Payton LeBlanc, with sophomore Erin Lewis, singled to load the bases with one out. Senior Wendy Gillet added an RBI single while classmate Sydney Hurley walked in a run to give Centenary the lead.

Dallas tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, but Centenary put up a three spot in the top of the fourth. With two outs and a runner on, a key error put runners on the corners. After a stolen base, Lewis put Centenary in the lead for good with a two-RBI single. Gillet followed with an RBI double.

Lewis added her first home run of her collegiate career, a two-run shot, to put Centenary up 7-2 after six innings. The Ladies scored two more in the ninth for the final score.

Smith had a hit in every at-bat with three runs scored. Lewis and Gillet both went 3-for-4. Gillet added a pair of RBIs while Lewis drove in four people and added two runs scored. Senior Amberlee Nix (3-5 picked up the win, allowing eight hits and two runs.

Dallas tied the game in the bottom of the third. With two outs and a runner at second, Julie Duenas tied the game with an RBI single.

Duenas and Liz Cordova both went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Emily Martin (0-3) took the loss, allowing nine hits and five runs (two earned).

 

Game 2

Centenary scored three runs in the second and never looked back in a 3-1 win. In the frame, Hurley, senior Cassie Gonzales, and junior Haley Campbell singled to load the bases. After a rare triple steal put the Ladies in the lead, freshman Nichole Gauntt laid down a sacrifice bunt to out the Ladies up two. Smith added a bunt single to drive in the third run.

Campbell and Smith both added a pair of hits. Freshman Hannah Scoggin (4-2) picked up the complete game win, allowing five hits and a run scored.

Dallas scored its lone run in the fifth off of a sacrifice fly by Brianna Hale. Haley Henson (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in 1.1 innings of work.

 

Game 3

Tied at one after three, Centenary exploded for six run in the fourth. Gonzales, Campbell, and freshman Teri Johnson led off the inning with singles to load the bases. Smith singled in a run and LeBlanc drew a bases-loaded walk. After Johnson scored, Lewis cleared the bases with a double to put Centenary up 7-1.

Campbell added a two-RBI single in the sixth for the final margin.

LeBlanc and Lewis both led the Ladies with two hits and three RBIs. Senior Nichole Aldridge (3-3) picked up the complete game win, allowing 10 hits and two runs.

Duenas led Dallas with four hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Martin (0-4) took the loss, allowing nine hits and five runs in three innings of work.

 

Game 4

The Ladies finished off the sweep with a 10-1 win. After scoring two in the third, Centenary blew open the game with four each in the final two innings. With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, sophomore Becca McGough sacrificed in a run. Lewis added a two-RBI single before Gillet tripled to left.

Johnson led Centenary with three hits and two RBIs. Nix (4-5) picked up the win, allowing five hits and an unearned run in five innings.

Dallas scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Cordova. Maggie Watts (0-3) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and five runs (two earned) in six innings of work.

Centenary returns to action Tuesday night, March 26, when it hosts East Texas Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
