Softball Earns Road Split at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas – After falling 4-0 in game one of the afternoon, the Ladies opened up an early lead and held on for the win as Centenary (12-16, 9-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) took game two, 5-4, against Schreiner (13-7, 9-5 SCAC) in a conference doubleheader Friday afternoon, April 5.

In the second contest, Centenary scored a run in the first and three more in the third to open up a 4-0 lead. In the first, freshman Teri Johnson reached on a single and advanced to scoring position on a single by junior Kaitlyn Price. Two groundouts plated Johnson for the first Ladies run of the day. In the third, senior Margeaux Smith, Johnson, and Price all singled to load the bases with no outs. Sophomore Erin Lewis hit a sacrifice fly. Senior Wendy Gillet followed with a fielder's choice, but Schreiner got no outs on the play and Johnson and Price scored to put Centenary up four.

After the Mountaineers got two back in the fourth, the Ladies plated what would be the winning run in the fifth. Gillet led off the inning with a walk and a sacrifice advanced her to second. Junior Haley Campbell reached on an error to put Ladies on the corners before Campbell got in a rundown long enough to allow Gillet to score.

Price and Smith led the Ladies from the plate with two hits each and a run scored.

Schreiner threatened to take the lead in the sixth and seventh, but the Ladies held on for the victory. In the sixth, Alyssa Maki and Rachel Brown singled. Gabriella Acuna was called out when the ball hit her outside of the batter's box, but Courtney cut the lead to one with a two-RBI double.

In the seventh with two outs, freshman Hannah Scoggin (5-3) gave up a double to Gracie Bell and walked Maki. However, a groundout ended the game.

Maki finished the game with two hits and two runs scored while Bigley added two hits and three RBIs. Kaylee Culpepper (3-2) took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned) in seven innings of work.

Game one saw Schreiner's Hannah Ortiz (3-5) carry a perfect game into the fifth until senior Cassie Gonzales singled. A Lewis walk and singles by freshman Jaymee Wilkinson and Gonzales brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a groundout ended the game.

Schreiner scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth for the win. In the fourth, Bigley led off the inning with a single before a pinch runner stole second. A flyout advanced the runner to third before a single by Ashton Vasquez gave the Mountaineers in the lead.

In the fifth, Maki doubled and Rachel Brown singled to put runners on the corners. Brown got in a rundown that plated Maki. Culpepper added an RBI double before Vasquez tripled in Culpepper.

Ortiz finished with a shutout in the circle for Schreiner, giving up only three hits. Maki, Brown, and Vasquez recorded a pair of hits.

Senior Amberlee Nix (4-9) took the loss, allowing 12 hits and four runs in six innings of work for the Ladies.
