SHREVEPORT, La. – Following a walk off win, 1-0, in the first game against Dallas (7-32), the Ladies dropped an extra-inning thriller to the Pirates as Centenary (16-22) lost in nine innings to Southwestern (34-4) 3-2 in the nightcap of the first day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament.
Scoreless in the bottom of the seventh against the Crusaders, junior Haley Campbell led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. With one out, sophomore Becca McGough singled to centerfield. Campbell rounded third and beat the wide throw home to score the winning run.
However, Centenary got out of jams in the fifth and sixth to keep the game scoreless. In the fifth, the first two Dallas batters reached off senior starter Nichole Aldridge. Karina Campo followed with a sharp-hit ball to McGough to short. She was able to knock it down and get the important first out with no one advancing. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, a groundout ended the threat.
In the sixth with one out, the Crusaders added back-to-back hits. Freshman Hannah Scoggin (8-5) came into the game in relief and got out of a jam to keep the game scoreless. She retired the side in order in the seventh before the Ladies won in walkoff fashion.
Campbell went 2-for-2 from the plate and scored the winning run to lead Centenary.
Julie Duenas led Dallas with a pair of hits. Maggie Watts (0-7) came into the game in relief in the seventh to take the loss.
In game two down 2-0 in the top of the sixth with a runner at second, Senior Sydney Hurley hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season to tie the game.
However, Southwestern scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Tori Montemayor doubled to right center, was bunted to third, and scored on Kaitlynn Copher's game-winning single on a line drive down the right-field line.
Scoggin took the loss in relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings. Lindsey Longuet (5-0) threw all nine innings for Southwestern.
Centenary returns to action Saturday afternoon, April 27 against Trinity. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
