Big Third Quarter Run Not Enough as Ladies Basketball Falls to Hendrix

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies were able to cut a 24-point deficit to seven in the third quarter, but the Warriors did not allow the home team to get any closer as Centenary (0-5) lost to Hendrix (3-1) 67-54 Sunday afternoon, November 25.

Up 14 at the break, Hendrix extended the lead to 24 with 6:57 by scoring 10 answered to begin the half. However, the Ladies countered with a 19-2 run to pull within seven. Junior Deunya Small started the run with a jumper, and after a Ladies stop, sophomore Ethany Cosby drained a three. Sophomore Bre Frierson split from the line and senior Savanah Doty hit a three off a steal. Centenary scored nine unanswered in a two-minute span.

Doty, Small, and freshman Priya Ponia all scored 11 to lead Centenary. Small added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.

Hendrix stopped the run momentarily with a layup, but Centenary made its next four shots to cut the deficit to seven. Doty and Cosby hit layups and Small drained a three. After a defensive stop, Doty flipped a shot toward the basket in the paint while being fouled that dropped.  She made the ensuing free throw and the Ladies trailed 54-38 with 1:03 left in the third.

Hendrix led 50-43 in the fourth before a steal and fastbreak hoop by Amber Turner and a layup by Jayla King pushed the visitors lead to double-digits for good.

Leading 33-19 at halftime, Hendrix scored 10 unanswered to open up its biggest lead of the game. Vinessa Daniel hit a fastbreak layup and Serena Pruitt added an inside shot. Daniel and Pruitt each hit a three as Hendrix led 43-19 with 6:57 left in the third quarter.

Daniel recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 boards. King came off the bench for 15 on 6-for-8 shooting, while Pruitt scored 11.

The Ladies return to action Tuesday night, November 27, when they take on MIllsaps. Game time in Jackson, Mississippi, is scheduled for 6 p.m.
