Ladies Drop Road Contest at Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Ladies scored the first eight points of the game and led by as much as nine in the first quarter, but a big run by the Tigers put the home team in the lead for good as Centenary (3-10, 1-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell at Colorado College (8-6, 5-1 SCAC) 94-66.

Senior Jasmine Morris made a jumper and junior Deunya Small made a layup to quickly put the Ladies up 4-0 less than a minute into the game. After neither team scored the next 1:27 of the game, Morris and Small made jumpers as Centenary led 8-0 with 7:16 left in the first quarter.

Colorado College scored the next four points, but a jumper by sophomore Bre Frierson and a three-pointer from senior Savanah Doty pushed the lead to 13-4 with 5:39 left in the first quarter.

Frierson led Centenary with a collegiate best of 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field. She has now reached double figures in the last three games and in 5-of-6 contests. Small added 10 points. However, Centenary could not overcome a 10-for-26 (38.5 percent) mark from the charity stripe – including a 1-for-7 (14.3 percent) mark in the first half.

With Centenary up 15-7, Colorado College scored 11 unanswered to take the lead for good. Jade Odom made a layup and McKenzee Gertz hit a three. Odom than hit a fastbreak three to quickly tie the game. After both team failed to score the minute, the hoop and harm from Jordan Meltzer off a steal put the home team up 18-15 with 2:26 left in the first quarter.

Colorado College led by as much as 38, 79-41, after three quarters. Centenary outscored the Tigers 25-15 in the fourth.

Five players reached double digits for Colorado College, led by 19 for Odom. Izzy Strigel came off the bench for 16, while Casey Torbet added 12. Meltzer and Gertz each scored 10. The Tigers went 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) from the charity stripe for the game.

Centenary concludes its first conference road trip of the season Saturday night, January 5, at Johnson and Wales. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST (4 p.m. MST).
