Ladies Basketball Falls Behind Early, Cannot Catch Up in 75-52 loss to Trinity

SAN ANTONIO – The Ladies were able to cut the deficit back to single digits after trailing by 20 early, but the Tigers never led by less than nine the rest of the way as Centenary (5-15, 3-8 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to conference-leading Trinity (18-4, 11-2 SCAC) 75-52 Saturday afternoon, February 2.

Going scoreless in the first six minutes of the game and trailing by 20, Centenary scored seven unanswered. Senior Jasmine Morris made a pair of free throws and after a Ladies defensive stand, hit a jumper. Sophomore Darelzray Bellard hit a three as Centenary trailed by 13 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Later, senior Savanah Doty hit a three to beat the buzzer as Centenary trailed 23-11 after one.

Both teams went scoreless the first two minutes of the second quarter until Bellard hit another three to bring the deficit back to single digits. However, the Ladies climbed no closer.

Sophomore Haylee Washington recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds and a career high 17 points. Morris added 12 and Doty chipped in with 11 points. However, Centenary could not overcome 29 turnovers and a Trinity 33-9 edge in points off miscues.

The Ladies trailed by 29 late until scoring seven unanswered. Morris completed an old-fashioned three before hitting a traditional three. Both teams split a pair from the charity stripe to end the game as Trinity claimed a 23-point win.

Trinity scored the first 20 points of the game in the first six minutes, going 7-for-11 from the field in that span. Abby Holland hit a pair of jumpers and Julia Ackerman hit a three. After Holland made a pair from the line, another Ackerman three put Trinity up double-digits. Emily Daniel made a three, Hailey Coleman made a layup, and Miranda Vega hit a three to quickly put the Tigers up 20.

Trinity went 4-for-8 from three in the first quarter alone.

Holland was the only Trinity player in double-digits, scoring 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting.

Centenary returns to action Tuesday, February 5, when it travels to Dallas. Tip-off in Irving, Texas, is set for 5:30 p.m.
