Ladies Soccer Nets a Pair in Second Half, Remains Undefeated in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies scored two beautiful second half goals within five minutes of each other as Centenary (7-3, 5-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) knocked off Austin College (0-7, 0-3 SCAC) Tuesday night, September 25, in a contest moved to C.E. Byrd HS.

In the first half, the Ladies out shot Austin College 9-1, including 4-0 in shots on target, but neither team scored.

However, junior Kyra Montes weaved her way through the defense to open up the scoring in the second half for her ninth goal of the season. Taking the ball near the end line, she dribbled in close to the goal. She maneuvered through the defense and found the back of the net to put Centenary up 1-0 in the 68th minute.

Just five minutes later, freshman Veronica Dougherty passed to classmate Amy Moreno. Moreno passed to junior Emilee Byrd. Byrd took aim and ripped a shot to the upper 90. Centenary led 2-0 in the 73rd minute.

Byrd has scored a pair of goals this season, both of which proved to be the game winner.

Lina Cruz scored off a corner from Kristi Stevens in the 79th minute for the 'Roos. Austin College threatened to tie with a corner kick in the 88th minute, but the header shot went wide. Centenary almost scored another in the final seconds when Montes got a breakaway, but the 'Roos Maya Erwin made a save as the final seconds ticked away on Centenary's sixth home win in as many tries for the season.

Freshman Avery Sanderson grabbed four saves on five shots faced in goal for the Ladies, while Erwin saved five shots.

Centenary returns to action Sunday, September 30, when it takes on Johnson & Wales for the first time in program history. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
