Another Comeback Gives Ladies Soccer Crucial Conference Road Win in Overtime

DENVER – Apparently, Ladies Soccer has developed a pattern in close Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games in 2018 of late goals in regulation to tie the game and the golden goal in overtime.

Junior Kyra Montes scored the equalizer in the 78th minute and scored the game winner with less than a minute left in the first overtime as Centenary (9-5, 6-5 SCAC) bested Johnson & Wales (6-7, 5-6 SCAC) 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon, October 21.

With the two goals, Montes now has 14 goals for the season and 17 for her career to break the Ladies Soccer Division III era record in both categories. It was also the eighth career game-winning goal to break that record.

With the Ladies down 1-0 in the 78th minute, junior Betzabet Bravo struck a through ball to Montes. Montes shot to the lower right and found the back of the net to level the game. Neither team managed a shot the rest of regulation as the game went to overtime.

In overtime, freshman goalkeeper Avery Sanderson stopped a shot and junior Emilee Byrd recorded a team save to keep the game level. However, in the 98th minute, the Ladies stole the ball near the sideline on the defensive side of the field. Freshman Itzel Sigarin passed back to senior Liz Knight, who lofted the ball down the field to Montes about 30 yards out on the left side of the field. Montes raced past a pair of defenders and beat the diving keeper far post for her the game winner.

Bravo led Centenary with three shots and two on target. Natasha Martin paced the Wildcats with three shots and two on goal.

Sanderson grabbed four saves on five shots faced, while Katelyn Peters tallied four saves on six shots faced.

Centenary, who has already clinched a top-4 seed in the SCAC Tournament, concludes the regular season at Austin College Tuesday night, October 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
