Ladies Volleyball Hangs Tough with #2 Colorado College, Falls to Dallas

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Ladies nearly took the first set and came back for a win in the third against the Tigers, but fell to #5 Colorado College (15-0, 5-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) 25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14. In the afternoon match, Centenary (7-10, 3-4 SCAC) fell to Dallas (9-5, 1-3 SCAC) 25-13, 22-25, 25-7, 25-16 to end the weekend Sunday, September 23.

Junior Marissa Sandoval had a great day for the Ladies in the back row, recording 37 digs in eight sets played (4.6 digs per set). Freshman Rachel Demerjian recorded a double-double against the Tigers and missed the accomplishment by a dig against the Crusaders, finishing action with 53 assists (6.6 per set) and 20 digs (2.5 per set) in eight sets played.

In set three against Colorado College, the Ladies trailed 14-8 when they scored five unanswered. Seniors Michaela Brantley and Shyann Pisano recorded kills and classmate Hailey Lawson aced. Brantley and freshman Elizabeth Epley combined for a block and a Colorado College error brought Centenary within one. An error by both teams saw the Tigers clinging to a 15-14 lead, but four unanswered put Centenary in the lead for good in the set. Kills from Epley and Lawson, followed by an Epley and senior Shannon Orlopp block, pushed the Ladies lead to two. Epley added a kill to end the run.

Colorado College pulled within 19-18, but a kill from freshman Alyssa Davis and a Pisano ace pushed the lead back to three. Both teams traded the next eight points as Centenary claimed the third set by three.

Davis led Centenary for the match with eight kills, followed by Epley and Lawson with five each.

Lizzy Counts paced Colorado College with 46 assists and 12 digs, while Myca Steffey-Bean contributed 12 kills and five blocks.

In match two, Dallas used service runs in set one and three to win the frames by 12 and 18, respectively. However, Centenary bounced back in the second set. Up 6-3, Centenary scored six unanswered to open a nine-point lead. A kill from Orlopp put junior Kristian Loving on serve, and an Orlopp-Demerjian block increased the lead to five. Two kills from Davis and two Dallas errors ended the run.

The Crusaders pulled within 21-20, but Centenary scored three straight give themselves four set points. A Brantley kill, a Dallas error, and a Demejian ace put Centenary up four. Dallas repelled two set points, but an Epley kill tied the match at a set apiece.

Freshman Lauren Kelley led Centenary with 10 kills. For Dallas, setter Elizabeth Smith added 36 assists, 15 digs, and five kills on 10 swings with no errors (.500).

Centenary returns to the court Tuesday at Pelican State-rival Louisiana College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
