R Shane Barton, MD, is the team doctor for Centenary College athletics.

Dr. Barton received his MD with honors from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, in 1999. Following graduation, he completed both an internship from 1999-2000 and his residency with the Baylor College of Medicine from 2000-2004. Following residency, Dr. Barton completed a fellowship with the Harvard University Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, working in sports medicine and shoulder surgery from 2004-2005.

The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery certified him in 2007.

Besides working with the Ladies and Gents athletic teams, he is affiliated with the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, the Willis Knighton Medical Center (North, South , Bossier) in Shreveport and Bossier City, and the Willis Knighton Medical Center – Pierremont in Shreveport. He also works with the Willis Knighton Portico Sports Medicine Outpatient Surgery Center and is an Assistant Professor at the LSU-Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

Dr. Barton is also a member of the American Medical Association, the Louisiana Medical Society, the Louisiana Orthopaedic Society, the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Barton completed his undergraduate at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, graduating with a Bachelors of Science as a Presidential Endowed Scholar in Computer Science and Engineering in 1991.
