Centenary Ladies Gym Talk: November 11 Edition

Centenary Ladies Gym Talk: November 11 Edition

Hey guys, it's your freshman Lani here and believe it or not, this is my first gym talk! I have to say this week was really about numbers and perseverance! Towards the end of the week we really pushed through to finish strong! In this gym talk I will reflect on some of the highlights which occurred at the end of the week.

Coach Jackie went out of town to visit her grandchildren for Halloween, so for Friday's practice we had our assistant coach Vaughn, who is such a delight to have, and we had quite an efficient practice.  After practice we had conditioning, which was endurance and abs based, led by two juniors Sierra Ponder and Jerrica Harris. I have to say even though the conditioning was hard, as a team we really worked hard and motivated each other. Later that night was the annual graveyard party and it was such an enjoyable time. I really enjoyed getting all dressed up with my teammates and going out to have a great time.

Saturday was the "Kick-off to Winter Sports" which showcased men's and women's basketball, along with your beloved Ladies gymnastics! It started out with us being introduced and then after that followed a basketball scrimmage, a 3-point contest with participants from the stands, which then lead to a 3-point contest with three of the men and women players from the basketball teams. Since we were unable to showcase on beam and bars, one of our Lady gymnasts, sophomore Kendall Knaps, proposed the idea of a handstand contest to the Director of Athletics which was approved. I thought that was such a good idea so at least we could show a little bit of what we actually do. I also enjoyed the participation of some of the other people from the stands which mainly consisted of students.

Last, but not least… during Sunday's practice was a floor.  As usual Coach Jackie had our assignment on the board when we rotated to floor, I have to say as long as that list looked I honestly thought it would be quite difficult to finish, but it also was a team assignment so I knew we could pull together to get it done. I was in the last floor group with junior Jerrica Harris, and sophomores Xian Baumgartner and Kendall Knaps.  I was quite proud of our group and our perseverance. We started off with our passes and we got stuck on a rough patch, but slowly after a few passes we started hitting all of our passes in a row. After that we had our routine assignment and once again we didn't start off too hot, but after the first routine we all caught the hang of it and hit all our skills within the routine with nicely, controlled landings.

If you want to keep up with your Centenary Ladies, which I know you do, don't forget to check back next week!

See ya later,

Leilani Johnson
