COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three teams have been held to less than 50 points for a game in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this season. Twice, it has been at the hands of the Gents.
For the third time this season, and the second consecutive game, the Gents have held a team to 18 points or less in the first half as Centenary (5-8, 3-2 SCAC) blasted Colorado College (5-10, 1-5 SCAC) 74-49 Friday night, January 4, in Colorado Springs.
The loss was the second worst home SCAC loss overall and the worst since the 2007-08 season for Colorado College.
Tied at 12 in the first half, Centenary held Colorado College without a field goal for more than five minutes while scoring 13 unanswered to take a double-digit lead for good. Sophomore Dakota Smith started the run with a layup. After a defensive stand, the Gents grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds. After a Colorado College foul, junior Cedric Harris drained a three. After another stop, senior Treylan Matthews hit a three as Centenary led 20-18.
Matthews scored a game high 19 points and made 5-for-7 from beyond the arc – making his first five three-point attempts in the game.
After senior Kaharri Carter split from the line, junior Jericho Gray completed a rare four-point play as Centenary led 25-12 with 7:34 left in the first half.
Colorado College made a three to end its scoring draught, but Centenary held the Tigers scoreless for another six minutes as the lead ballooned to 20. Gray made back-to-back layups before freshman Ty Prince made a jumper. Prince made a layup before Matthews grabbed a steal and was fouled. He made both from the charity stipe to give the Gents a 35-15 lead with less than a minute until the intermission.
Gray scored a season best 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting, including a perfect 6-for-6 mark from inside the arc. Centenary used a 21-6 advantage in points off turnovers as the Gents made a season-low seven miscues.
Colorado College pulled within 43-24 in the second half before a 7-0 run pushed the lead north of 20 for the rest of the game. Matthews buried a three and Smith split from the charity stripe. Matthews drained a triple as Centenary led 50-24 with 15 minutes left in the game.
Prince added 13 points for the Gents. Freshman Ricky Ray came off the bench for six assists and three steals with no turnovers.
Isaac Zachem came off the bench for 13 points to lead Colorado College. CooXooEii Black, who is third in the SCAC in scoring for the season, was held to a season-low 11 points.
Centenary concludes its first road trip of 2019 when it takes on Johnson & Wales in Denver Saturday night, January 5. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST (6 p.m. MST).
