Four Individual Wins, Freestyle Relay Sweep Paces Ladies and Gents Swimming against Colorado College

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies and Gents ended their first swim meet of the season strong with wins in both the men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay in a dual meet between Centenary and Colorado College Friday night, October 19.

The Ladies fell to the Tigers 141-57, while the Gents lost 137-67.

The race of the meet came at the very end in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay. Entering the final 100 yards of the race, freshman relay anchor Miguel Vasquez trailed the Tigers' anchor by 0.34. He made up a tenth of a second after the first 50 yards, but he still trailed Colorado College's Reese Gawronski with 25 yards left. Vasquez turned on the jets and out-touched the visitors as the quartet of freshman Mitchell Lulich, junior Eddie Dyess, senior McRee Smith, and Vasquez finished the race in 3:22.54 – 0.34 seconds ahead of the Tigers.

It was not the only close win Vasquez picked up in the meet. He took the 200 butterfly title by a mere 0.08 seconds, finishing with a time of 2:03.83.

On the woman's side, the team of junior Jessi Jordan and freshmen Lindsay Strohm, Madelyn Frederick, and Kaylin Swoboda finished with a time of 3:55.50, more than three seconds faster than the Tigers.

Frederick also picked up a win in her first individual race of her career when she won the 50 freestyle by 0.04 seconds, touching the wall in 26.37.

Other wins for Centenary Swimming include Lulich in the 200 breaststroke. He touched the wall in 2:17.78, more than five seconds faster than his nearest competitor. On the Ladies side, freshman Brianna Serret won the 200 backstroke by more than four seconds. She finished with a time of 2:17.47.

The Ladies and Gents Swimming team closes out the weekend Saturday, October 20, when they host Hendrix and Colorado College. First event is set to begin at noon.
