Ladies Tennis Splits Weekend for First Win in Four Seasons

SHREVEPORT/PINEVILLE, La. – After falling to Texas Lutheran 9-0 on Saturday, the Ladies upended Pelican State-rival Louisiana College in Pineville 5-4 on Sunday, March 10. The Gents fell to the Bulldogs, 9-0, before falling to Louisiana College, 6-3

The Ladies started out strong against the Wildcats by only dropping one set in a doubles sweep. Centenary won 8-0 at second (seniors Grace Doucet and Shyann Pisano) and third (freshman London Todd and junior Taylor Morgan) doubles, Meanwhile the freshmen duo of Alyssa Davis and Brianna Serret won 8-1 at first doubles.

At second singles, Davis picked up a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Molly Edelman, while Morgan clinched the match with a pair of 6-0 set wins against Diana Soto.

On Saturday against Texas Lutheran, Davis fell to Illeana Levy at third singles in the super tiebreaker, 10-7.

"It was a high-quality match as both players raised their level in the big moments. Levy really stepped up her game in the decider to earn the win," said head coach Matt Coomer.

After Levy took the first set 6-4, David battled back to tie the match at 6-3 before Levy took the tiebreaker.

While the Gents lost 9-0 against the Bulldogs, the Gents gave Texas Lutheran all it could handle at first and second doubles. Sophomore Nathan Lim and junior Max Wamsley fell 8-5 at first doubles. Sophomore Kevin Le and freshman Pius Lau fought hard in an 8-6 loss at second doubles.

"Le and Lau refused to go away, coming back from a break of a serve down several times before the Bulldogs finally were able to win the match," said Coomer.

Meanwhile, the Gents played Louisiana College tough, losing first and second doubles 8-7 and third doubles 8-6. In singles action, Lim beat David Dias at second singles, 6-1, 6-2. At third singles, Wamsley beat Britton Patton 6-2, 6-1.

Rounding out the match, freshman Miguel Vasquez beat Evan Norwood 6-3, 6-2.

"Overall, I feel good about our effort this weekend. We went up against a solid Texas Lutheran program that made us earn every point," said Coomer. "As a program, we have embraced the challenge of playing these tough teams, knowing that these are the types of battles we must go through in order to reach the level we want to be."

Centenary Ladies and Gents Tennis returns to action Thursday, March 14, at Ouachita Baptist. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
