As the first college STUNT program in the state of Louisiana, the team will take the mat for the first time on Feb. 8 in Warner, Okla. at Connors State College (NJCAA) for a one-day tournament versus Connors State and Southwest Baptist University (DII).
USA Cheer created STUNT as an opportunity for colleges, universities and high schools to meet the strict Title IX requirements of a sport. With more than 500,000 high school cheerleaders, STUNT expands participation opportunities for young women by providing an avenue for female athletes to use their cheerleading background in a new format.
STUNT, according to USACheer.org, is "One of the fastest growing female sports in the country, and removes the crowd-leading element and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling. These elements are put together in short routines that both teams must perform head-to-head on the floor at the same time. The team that executes the skills best wins the round and the point, and has the opportunity to determine which routine level will be called next. With four quarters of play – partner stunts, pyramids & tosses, jumps & tumbling, and team routine – STUNT is an exciting sport to play, coach and watch.
"It's an exciting time for our program to finally be able to release our first ever official STUNT schedule," said Centenary head coach Kaylee King.
"A lot of time and effort has gone into planning out our season in a way that will both excite and challenge our team. As the first college in Louisiana to sponsor STUNT as a varsity sport, we have an awesome opportunity to represent not only Centenary but the state of Louisiana in the game of STUNT. We are a young team who are still learning the sport and what it all entails, but they are eager to learn and have been working on and off the mat to be prepared for the spring. As we eagerly await the kick-off of the season at our first tournament, our goals are simple - just play!
"Getting out on the mat and gaining the experience of this new game is the biggest goal this season. We are playing teams from various divisions with varying records and years of experience. This will allow our team to play teams more our size while also having a chance to see what our program can be built to. I look forward to seeing all of their hard work come to fruition"
New to the STUNT game this season is the opportunity to play an 8-round format which is half of the original 16-round format originally played by all college teams. In a 16-round game, teams will play four rounds per quarter for a total of 16 rounds. In the new format, teams will play two rounds per quarter. Teams that are new to STUNT or smaller in roster size are able to elect which format they wish to play. Centenary will see a mixture of both throughout the season. Both formats count as full games for the program and will warrant the same opportunities for stats for the athletes.
Two weeks after their opening games, the Centenary STUNT team will head back to Oklahoma where they will take on Hope International University (NAIA) on Thursday night, Connors State College (NJCAA) and Southern Nazarene University (DII) on Friday and conclude the weekend with a match up versus Oklahoma Baptist University (DI) on Saturday.
Centenary STUNT is considered an independent this season meaning they won't have a conference to play in allowing them to play cross divisionally throughout the entire season. The teams schedule bodes junior colleges, NAIA, and teams from all three NCAA divisions.
The team is set to finish out the season with three weekends in a row of action starting in Denton, Texas at Texas Woman's University where they will play Texas Woman's University (DII), St. Edwards University (DII), and St. Mary's University - Texas (DII).
Following a stint in Texas, the team will head to Conway, Ark. Where they will play at Central Arkansas University against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University (DII), Southern Nazarene University (DII), and Drury University (DII).
To conclude the season, the Centenary STUNT team will travel to Martin, Tenn. to play their final tournament at the University of Tennessee at Martin. During their time in the Volunteer State, the team will take on all Division I teams as they face off against the Skyhawks of UT Martin (DI), Northern Kentucky University (DI), Missouri State University (DI), and Central Arkansas University (DI).
