Gents Pick Up Pair Of Wins In Season Opener Versus Ozarks

Shreveport – The Centenary swimming teams opened the 2022-23 season with a split versus the University of the Ozarks Eagles on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference dual meet at the Centenary Fitness Center (FIT).

The Ladies won 125-95 and the Gents fell 141-42 in the debut for Centenary head coach Thomas Radam. Centenary recorded 11 individual victories on Saturday and one relay win. Sophomore Madeline Vacula (Belton, Texas) had a fantastic meet as she earned three individual victories and junior Bryn Jenkins (Houston, Texas), senior Christine Goodman (Alexandria, La.),  and junior Anacelia Galeano-Balam (Baton Rouge, La.), each picked up a pair. On the men's side, junior Antonio Barbee (Plaquemine, La.) and freshman Donovan Tohill (Lumberton, Texas) each earned one individual win.

Vacula, coming off of a superb rookie season in which she earned all-conference honors, now owns 10 individual wins in her young career. She won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:05.24, the 100-yard IM in 1:08.11, and the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:26.38. She was also part of the Ladies' victorious 200-yard medley relay team that swam a time of 2:04.00, joining Jenkins, Galeano-Balam (Baton Rouge, La.), and Goodman. 

Jenkins won the 50-yard free in a time of 29.02 and claimed a win in the 50 back, swimming a time of 32.86. Galeano-Balam won the 100 fly in a time of 1:08.66, the 50 fly in 30.35, and placed third in the 200 free (2:21.08). Barbee swam a time of 25.71 to win the 50 fly and Tohill, in his collegiate debut, won the 200 free in a time of 2:07.18. Barbee and Tohill finished second and third in the 50 free and freshman Jameson Feeney (Shreveport, La.) earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.89) and the 100 IM (1:08.91).

Goodman won the 50 breaststroke in a time of 35.94 and the 100 breast in a time of 1:19.97 and senior Katie Malicoat (Wichita, Kan.) recorded two second-place finishes in the 50 breast (36.26) and 100 breast (1:20.82). Senior Camryn Hebert (Youngsville, La.) finished third in the 100 IM (1:13.32) while Malicoat and Goodman placed fourth and fifth behind Hebert. Freshman Emma Allsopp (Belfast, Northern Ireland) had an impressive collegiate debut as she finished third in the 50 free (32.89) and fifth in the 100 free (1:16.77).

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Oct. 14 (6 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 15 (10 a.m.) as the Maroon and White welcome McMurry to town for a pair of meets.

Centenary hits the road for the first time to face Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. and will then be tested in its annual trip to Conway, Ark. for the Hendrix Invitational (Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.). The Ladies and Gents will host their annual Intrasquad/Alumni Meet on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. on the final day of the college's Homecoming celebration.

The Ladies and Gents will face Austin College for a pair of conference dual meets top open the second half of the season in 2023. The first will be the Austin College Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. in Sherman, Texas and then the 'Roos come to town on Saturday, Jan. 21 for Centenary's Senior Day meet at 1 p.m.

Centenary will then head to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 8-11 in Garland, Texas.
