Track & Field Teams Set For Pelican Relays

Baton Rouge - The Centenary men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Pelican Relays hosted by Southern University on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Field events are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. in Jaguar Park with the men's hammer, women's javelin and men's long jump. Running events will start at 12:35 p.m.

Centenary had an impressive showing at the Dan Veach Invitational in Magnolia, Ark., hosted by Southern Arkansas University, on March 25 in its most recent action.

Junior Xavier Venious (Bossier City, La.) won the men's 400 hurdles with an impressive time of 57.39 which is the third-fastest time in the conference this season. He teamed with junior Coby Harris (Lafayette, La.), freshman Lydell Hunter (New Orleans. La.), and freshman Joshua Ware (Shreveport, La.) to finish second in the men's 4 x 100m relay (43.74). That time is the fifth-best in the conference so far this season.

The Ladies also had a great day as they recorded five top-10 finishes. Senior Veronica Dougherty (McAllen, Texas) finished seventh in the 1500 meters in a time of 5:53.76, junior Maddie Schonberg (Harbor City, Calif.) finished 10th in the shot put (8.81m) and 11th in the discus (24.57m).

Freshman Olivia Sepulvado (Zwolle, La.) finished sixth in the 400 meters (1:18.72), freshman Julianna Malloy (Dallas, Texas) placed 10th in the 100 meter hurdles (17.82), and sophomore Aubrey Salazar (San Antonio, Texas) finished 10th in the discus (26.81m) and 13th in the shot put (8.11m).

Senior Kevin Brown (New Orleans, La.) earned a pair of top-10 individual finishes – fourth in the javelin (41.26m) and eighth in the discus (34.01m). Freshman Eli Melton (Carencro, La.) finished 10th in the 1500 meters (5:01.14) and 13th in the 800 meters (2:21.64). Hunter earned a pair of 13th-place finishes in the 200 meters (23.47) and 100 meters (11.37). Junior Coby Harris (Lafayette, La.) finished 16th in the 100 meters (11.62).
