Baseball Remains Perfect at Home; Aims for Series Sweep on Saturday

Shreveport- The Centenary baseball team remained unbeaten at home this season and clinched a series win over the Dubuque University Spartans with a 5-1 win on Friday evening at Shehee Stadium.

The Gents (8-2) opened their five-game homestand with a 13-6 victory on Thursday. The Spartans fell to 0-2 on the season. The teams will play the third and final game of the series on Saturday at Noon as the Gents go for the sweep.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead after an inning but then the Gents scored three times in the third to take the lead for good. Centenary then added single runs in the fourth and eighth to win for the eighth time in 10 games to start the season and for the seventh time in its last eight at home.

Senior Luke Royle (Dodge City, Kan.) picked up his first win of the season on Friday in relief of Gents' starting pitcher Conner Poche (Lutcher, La.). Jordan Nelson (0-1) started for the Spartans and suffered the loss as he allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits in five innings of work. He walked three and struck out two. Aiden Sullivan relived Nelson and pitched the final three innings, allowing just a single run on three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.

Poche pitched two innings and allowed a run on three hits with no walks and two K's. Royle, making his third appearance on the mound this season, went 5.2 innings and allowed no runs on just three hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Parker Primeaux (Lake Charles, La.) pitched the final 1.1 innings and recorded the save, his second of the season. He allowed one hit and had a strikeout.

Senior first baseman Preston Ludwick (Pflugerville, Texas) and fellow senior right fielder Cody Crowder (Shepherd, Texas) each paced the Gents' nine-hit effort with two hits apiece. Each also had a run scored and a walk to their credit. Ludwick was 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored on Thursday and is 4-8 with two RBI and three runs scored so far in the series. Senior second baseman Tyler Erickson (Houston, Texas), junior catcher Ben Bridges (Beckville, Texas), senior DH Tyler Welch (Alexandria, La.), and Royle had the Gents' RBI on Friday.

Dubuque second baseman Cole Destafanis had a game-high three hits and had a walk. First baseman Kellen Mitchell had the Spartans' lone RBI of the night with an RBI groundout in the top of the first to score Destafanis.

The Gents will look to record a series sweep for the second weekend in a row on Saturday. Centenary swept the Huntingdon College Hawks on the road last weekend. Centenary is now 7-1 in its last eight home games dating back to last season and has won 17 of their last 23 games overall going back to the start of last season.
