Gents Fall At Home To Schreiner On Sunday, 90-74

Shreveport - The Centenary men's basketball team lost for just the second time all season at home on Sunday as the Gents fell 90-74 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Gold Dome.

The Gents (10-8, 5-5 SCAC) had only lost once on its home court this season, dropping a 63-54 decision to Texas College on Dec. 4. Schreiner improved to 10-10 and 8-3 in conference play with the win. Centenary is 8-2 at home this season and an impressive 23-5 over its last 28 games.

Schreiner was on target all afternoon offensively, shooting 53.7 % (29-54) overall from the floor and went 10-28 (35.7 %) from beyond the arc. The Gents finished 25-66 (37.9 %) overall and went 12-34 (35.3 %) from three-point range. Both teams were solid at the free throw line as the Mountaineers made 22-26 attempts for 84.6 % and the Gents sank 12-16 for 75 %. Schreiner finished with a 39-31 advantage on the boards and had five players in double figures. Centenary had two players finish in double figures led by a game-high 18 points from Junior F Seth Thomas (Kilgore, Texas). Sunday marked the 11th time this season that the Gents have hit at least 10 three-point baskets in a game this season. Centenary has made double-digit three pointers in seven of 10 conference games this season.

Schreiner shot 58.1 % (18-31) from the floor in the first half to take a 46-31 lead. The Mountaineers connected on half (8-16) of their attempts beyond the arc and had 10 assists on their 18 made baskets while collecting 20 rebounds. Centenary struggled offensively in the first half and finished at 34.4 % and only made 4-15 3-point attempts.

Thomas scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and finished the game with three steals, two rebounds, and two assists in 28 minutes. He was 6-9 overall from the floor, made 4-5 from beyond the arc, and was 2-2 from the free throw line. Thomas has reached double figures in six of eight games this month and done so in six of the Gents' 10 conference games. Junior G Jalen Behr (Athens, Ga.) scored 16 in 24 minutes of action as he was 5-10 from the floor and made one of his 3-point attempts from beyond the arc. He went 5-8 from the free throw line with seven rebounds and three steals.

Junior G Ralph Johnson (White Castle, La.) scored seven points in 21 minutes with four assists and a rebound. He shot 2-9 overall, 2-2 from the free throw line, and made one trey. Senior F Jarrell Taylor (Leesville, La.) added seven points and three rebounds in 12 minutes. He was 3-7 overall and made one trey in four attempts with an assist. Freshman G Syied Dyer (Atlanta, Ga.) scored six points in just nine minutes off the bench as he made both of his 3-point attempts.

Junior G Drew Young (Lake Charles, La.) scored five points and grabbed five rebounds in 21 minutes, making 2-8 shots overall and one 3-pointer with one assist and one steal. Sophomore G Braeden Board (Rayne, La.) played 15 minutes and scored one point and grabbed three rebounds. Senior guards Kile Mingo (Cypress, Texas) and AJ Hall (Thibodaux, La.) each scored five points and Hall had two rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 13 minutes. He hit one trey and finished 2-2 from the free throw line. Mingo shot 2-9 overall and one assist and one rebound in 13 minutes.

Darian Gibson and Jalen Ned each scored 17 points to lead the Mountaineers. Kamden Ross scored 16 with 12 rebounds, Alex Dehoyos scored 13, and Beau Cervantes added 10 off the bench. Ross played all 40 minutes and had an assist, a blocked shot, and a steal, Ned went 10-11 from the FT line, and Cervantes was 5-5 from the line.

The Game was tied at 27-27 with 6:20 remaining in the first half until the Mountaineers went on a 16-2 run to take a 43-29 lead with 1:01 left after a 3-pointer by Cervantes. Gibson then hit a trey before the halftime buzzer for a 15-point lead at the break for Schreiner. The Mountaineers scored the first five points of the second half to take a 20-point lead (51-31) with 18:12 left and a pair of free throws by Ned made it a 65-44 game with 11:16 left. A 3-pointer by Thomas cut the Schreiner lead to 79-69 at the 2:29 mark to cap a 25-14 Centenary run. Several clutch free throws and timely baskets, though, allowed the visitors to maintain their lead and ice the game.

The Gents and Mountaineers will rematch in Kerrville next weekend, meeting on Friday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
