Gents On Road This Weekend To Face Schreiner And Trinity

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary men's basketball team is back on the road this weekend for a pair of key Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contests beginning on Friday evening against the Schreiner University Mountaineers at 5:30 p.m.

The Gents (10-8, 5-5 SCAC) and Mountaineers (10-10, 8-3) will meet for the second time in six days after Schreiner handed Centenary a rare home loss, winning 90-74 at the Gold Dome on Sunday afternoon. The Gents lost for just the second time all season at home as they are 8-2 at home this season and an impressive 23-5 over the last 28 games. Schreiner is currently third in the conference standings while Centenary is fourth.

Schreiner is second in the conference in scoring, averaging 77.6 points per game while Centenary is fifth at 76.4 PPG. The Gents are second in scoring defense allowing just 68.9 PPG and the Mountaineers are fifth (76.6 PPG). Schreiner ranks second in field-goal percentage shooting 44.4 % overall while Centenary checks in at sixth at 41.2 %. Both teams shoot well from the free throw line as the Mountaineers are currently third in the SCAC at 70.4 % and the Gents are fourth at 69.6 %.

Centenary is fourth in the conference in FG % defense (42.1 %) and Schreiner is fifth at 43.0 %. The Gents lead the conference in 3-point FG % (35.1 %) while the Mountaineers ranks fifth at 31.0 %. Centenary also leads the SCAC in 3-point FG's made (176 total/9.8 per game). Besides shooting the ball well from beyond the arc, Centenary also defends it well, as the Maroon and White rank second in the conference allowing opponents to shoot just 29 % from three-point range. Schreiner is sixth in the league (33.6 %).

The Mountaineers lead the conference in rebounding offensive, averaging 42.2 per game while the Gents are ninth in the league at 35.8/game. On the defensive end, Schreiner is also atop the conference (35.3/game) while Centenary is seventh (41.2/game). The Gents lead the conference in blocked shots (74 total/4.1 per game) and the Mountaineers are last in the conference, Schreiner is fifth in assists while Centenary is sixth, and the Gents are second in steals while the Mountaineers are seventh.

Schreiner was on target all afternoon offensively in last Sunday's meeting, shooting 53.7 % (29-54) overall from the floor and went 10-28 (35.7 %) from beyond the arc. The Gents finished 25-66 (37.9 %) overall and went 12-34 (35.3 %) from three-point range. Both teams were solid at the free throw line as the Mountaineers made 22-26 attempts for 84.6 % and the Gents sank 12-16 for 75 %. Schreiner finished with a 39-31 advantage on the boards and had five players in double figures. Centenary had two players finish in double figures led by a game-high 18 points from Junior F Seth Thomas (Kilgore, Texas). Sunday marked the 11th time this season that the Gents have hit at least 10 three-point baskets in a game this season. Centenary has made double-digit three pointers in seven of 10 conference games this season.

Thomas, who ranks 17th in the conference averaging 10.3 PPG, scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and finished the game with three steals, two rebounds, and two assists in 28 minutes. He was 6-9 overall from the floor, made 4-5 from beyond the arc, and was 2-2 from the free throw line. Thomas has reached double figures in six of eight games this month and done so in six of the Gents' 10 conference games.

Junior G Jalen Behr (Athens, Ga.) scored 16 in 24 minutes of action as he was 5-10 from the floor and made one of his 3-point attempts from beyond the arc. He went 5-8 from the free throw line with seven rebounds and three steals. Behr is averaging 7.3 PPG.  Junior G Ralph Johnson (White Castle, La.) scored seven points in 21 minutes with four assists and a rebound. He shot 2-9 overall, 2-2 from the free throw line, and made one trey.

Senior F Jarrell Taylor (Leesville, La.) added seven points and three rebounds in 12 minutes. He was 3-7 overall and made one trey in four attempts with an assist. Taylor leads the team in scoring this season, averaging 12.1 PPG and is also the team leader in rebounding, grabbing 5.7 per game. Taylor is 13th in the conference in scoring and 11th in rebounding.

Centenary wraps up the weekend on Saturday as the Gents face Trinity in San Antonio at 2 p.m.
