Big Third Quarter by the Pirates Drops Ladies Basketball against Southwestern

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies used a 16-3 run to erase an early 11-2 deficit, but the Pirates used a 20-10 advantage in the third to take the lead for good as Centenary (3-8, 1-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Southwestern (3-9, 2-1 SCAC) 60-52 Saturday night, December 29.

The Ladies trailed 11-2 halfway through the first quarter before scoring seven straight. Freshman Priya Ponia drained a three. After a steal from sophomore Haylee Washington – who matched a collegiate best with five thefts – sophomore Bre Frierson cleaned up a miss for the layup. Sophomore Ashlynn Albert ended the spurt with a jumper. Southwestern added a layup and then split from the line, but a layup by Frierson cut the deficit to three after one.

Ponia tied the game on a three and two free throws by Ethany Cosby gave Centenary its first lead of the game. A layup by Frierson capped the Centenary run and gave the home team an 18-14 advantage.

Frierson came off the bench to lead the Ladies with 16 points on 8-for-12 shooting.

Centenary led 33-32 in the third before Southwestern scored nine unanswered to take the lead for good. Noel Pratts picked up a steal and the fastbreak hoop before Tori Carraway hit a jumper. Zhazze Brown then hit the only three-pointer for the Pirates in the game before Pratts added another fastbreak layup.

The Ladies cut the deficit to four on four occasions the rest of the game, but Southwestern iced the game away by hitting all eight free throws attempted in the final 26 seconds.

Brown led the visitors with 16 points, while Carraway added 13 points and nine boards. Pratts added 10 points.

Centenary closes out the weekend Sunday afternoon, December 30, when it takes on Texas Lutheran. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
