Ladies Soccer Buries Blazers with Second Half Surge

SHREVEPORT, La. – Like last season, the Ladies found themselves in a 1-0 deficit at half of the home opener. And like 2017, the Ladies put together a strong second stanza for the come-from-behind win as Centenary (1-0) knocked off Belhaven (0-1-1) 3-1 at Mayo Field Saturday afternoon, September 1.

"I'm really proud of how the Ladies responded today after the first half. We played with much more confidence and pace in the second," said Head Coach Greg Cathell. "Today was a great start to the season, but we realize that there are plenty of areas to improve in while continuing to move forward throughout the year."

Trailing 1-0 at half, it did not take long for the Ladies to score the equalizer. In the 51st minute, junior Betzabet Bravo found classmate Kyra Montes at the top of the box. Montes shot beat the keeper for her fourth goal in a Centenary uniform. Montes later added an assist on an insurance goal scored by sophomore Pamela Fonseca in the 77th minute.

Montes led the Ladies with five shots, three of which were on target.

Junior Emilee Byrd made the most of her first collegiate goal, finding the back of the net for the game-winner in the 71st minute. Freshman Veronica Dougherty passed to Byrd at the top of the box. Byrd made a touch, then beat the keeper from 20 yards out to give Centenary its first lead of the season.

Centenary outshot Belhaven 15-4 in the game, including 8-2 on shots on target. After both teams put a pair of attempts on goal in the first half, the Ladies put six on target while holding the Blazers to none in the second half.

Belhaven scored its loan goal in the ninth minute. Erica Rempel scored off a pass from Jennifer Hosey.

Georgia Logan played all 90 minutes in goal for the visitors. Sophomore Maggie Pitcher played the first half while freshman Avery Sanderson played the second for the Ladies.

Centenary returns to action Wednesday, September 5, when it welcomes Millsaps to Mayo Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
