Centenary Women's Soccer Team Opens Season with 1-0 victory over LaGrange

Jackson, Miss. - The Centenary Women's Soccer Team (1-0) opened its 2019 season with a 1-0 victory over the LaGrange Panthers at Harper Davis Field on the campus of Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. Friday evening.

The Ladies won their season opener for the second straight season and will aim for a 2-0 start as they play at Belhaven on Saturday. The host Blazers and Ladies will square off at 5 p.m. 

Centenary junior midfielder Migui Boldrin scored the lone goal Friday, connecting at the 14:10 mark of the first half off assists from teammates Haleigh Gangloff and Pamela Fonseca

"We were pleased to get the result today in our first game of the regular season, said Centenary head coach Greg Cathell. "Starting six freshmen comes with both excitement and nerves, but I thought the upperclassmen showed good leadership in helping guide the ship."

The Ladies held a 12-5 advantage in shots in Friday's match and took nine corner kicks to zero for LaGrange. Goalie Karlie Delhommer played the entire 90 minutes and collected five saves. 

Centenary was picked to finish fourth in the SCAC in preseason voting by the league's head coaches and is led by Cathell, entering his third season at the helm for the Ladies. A pair of seniors, forward Kyra Montes and midfielder Emilee Byrd, were both All-SCAC first team selections from a year ago are back to lead the Ladies. Montes is the league's leading returning scorer, having found the back of the net 14 times last season.

The Ladies posted a 9-6 overall mark and a 6-5 record in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play in 2018 and have high hopes for the 2019 season under the leadership of Cathell, in his third season at the helm. 

"We look forward to a good side in Belhaven tomorrow at 5 p.m. and we will certainly need to be at our best."

The Ladies will travel back to Jackson next week to square off with Millsaps on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. The Ladies open their home slate on Tuesday, Sept. 10 with a 5 p.m. match against LeTourneau at Mayo Field.
