Georgetown, Texas- The Centenary women's soccer team was blanked 2-0 by the Southwestern Pirates on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.
The Ladies (2-6) suffered their fourth-straight shutout after falling 1-0 at Texas Lutheran on Friday night. Southwestern (8-1) won its second-straight match after recording a 2-1 win on Friday versus St. Thomas.
The Pirates scored their first goal just over 12 minutes into the first half as Yamila Lara found the net for a 1-0 lead with the assist credited to Samantha Hazen. Southwestern took that lead into halftime and then added a second goal in the 53rd minute as Abrianna Morales scored on a free kick with the assists credited to Juliet Pridgen and Lilly Van Meter.
Centenary senior GK Avery Sanderson (McKinney, Texas) played the entire match and made two saves. Southwestern goalie Johanna Campbell also went the distance and made one save as she pitched the shutout. The Pirates took 10 shots in the match to four for the Ladies and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Ladies, despite dropping both matches this weekend, have still won six of their last nine non-conference road matches dating back to the 2019 season. The matches against Texas Lutheran Friday and Sunday against the Pirates did not count as a conference contest as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play does not begin until next weekend.
Centenary remains away from home next weekend to open conference play on Friday, Oct. 1 at Trinity in San Antonio, Texas followed by an Oct. 3 match at Schreiner in Kerrville, Texas. Centenary's next home match will be Friday, Oct. 8 versus St. Thomas at 5 p.m.
