Bennett And Snell Lead Gents To Third-Place Tie At UMHB Invitational
The Centenary men's golf team finished in a tie for third place on Tuesday in the UMHB Invitational hosted by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Sammons Park Golf Course.
Temple, Texas – The Centenary men's golf team finished in a tie for third place on Tuesday in the UMHB Invitational hosted by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Sammons Park Golf Course.
The Gents shot a 22-over par 582 to finish in a three-way tie with host Mary Hardin-Baylor's "A" and "B" teams. Centenary shot a 13-over par 293 in Tuesday's final round after a 9-over par 289 in Monday's opening round as the Gents finished the day in a tie for second place at the par 70, 6,597-yard course.
Gettysburg College claimed the team title after firing a 14-under par 266 to finish well ahead of second-place McMurry University (17-over par 577). East Texas Baptist University finished sixth at 41-over 601, Howard Payne University's "A" team shot a 44-over par 604 to finish seventh, Belhaven University finished eighth at 54-over par 614, and Howard Payne's "B" team finished ninth at 82-over par 642.
Senior Andrew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) finished in a tie for second place at 3-under par 137 after shooting rounds of 69-68 to lead the way for the Gents. Bennett, who won the individual title at this same tournament last season, finished in a tie with Gettysburg's Myles Cunningham III and they each finished two shots behind individual champion Patrick Kilcoyne of Gettysburg (1-under par 139). Gettysburg's Daniel Casanta, the individual leader after round one, struggled on Tuesday as he shot a 10-over par 80 and fell 11 spots to finish 12th.
Sophomore Aubrey Snell (Shreveport, La.) rocketed up the leaderboard on Tuesday as he fired a 6-under par 66 to finish fifth. Snell, who shot an 8-over par 78 in Monday's opening round, recorded his fourth-career top-10 finish and has done so in both tournaments this Fall. He now has three top-five finishes in his young career.
Freshman Ryder Briggs (Blanchard, La.) finished 30th at 13-over par 153 (71-82), junior Jeffrey Borchert (Katy, Texas) shot a 14-over par 154 (74-80) to place 32nd, senior Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.) finished 48th at 24-over par 164 (78-86), and junior Colton Mayer (Heath, Texas) shot a 28-over par 168 (87-81) to finish 52nd.
Bennett, who tied for sixth place at the 2024 SCAC Preview last week, continued the strong start to his season and at the same time built on his impressive resume as he recorded his 11th top-10 finish and eighth top-five finish.
The Gents, who recorded a seventh-place finish in the 2024 SCAC Preview on Sept. 17 to begin the Fall season, will next be in action on Monday, Oct. 14 as they are set to face the Southern University Jaguars in a dual match at Oakwing Golf Club in Alexandria, La.
