The Gents (1-1) head into their home opener fresh off an impressive 4-1 win over the Huntingdon University Hawks in a neutral-site, non-conference match on Sunday in Columbus, Miss. on the campus of Mississippi University for Women (MUW). Centenary rebounded from a 1-0 season-opening loss on Saturday to the Piedmont University Lions in another non-conference contest.

The Yellow Jackets (0-1-1) tied Lyon College on Aug. 31 to open their season and fell 3-1 to Schreiner University on Monday in Kerrville, Texas in their most recent match. The teams are meeting for the second season in a row after the Gents edged the Yellow Jackets 3-2 at home last season. Centenary leads the all-time series 3-0 with previous wins in 2014 and 2016. Howard Payne is a member of the American Southwest Conference and is located in Brownwood, Texas.

The Gents received goals from senior MF Hunter Booth (Harrodsburg, Ky.), senior D Christopher Tarr (Durban, South Africa), freshman MF Emiliano Mondragon (Dallas, Texas), and freshman MF Kevin Huskey Jr. (Dallas, Texas) in the win over Huntingdon. Freshman MF Hayden Hughes (Dallas, Texas) tallied a pair of assists and Mondragon and Tarr each had an assist.

Huntingdon scored first, finding the net in the 11th minute but the Gents tied it in the 30th minute as Booth scored, assisted by Tarr, to tie the match at 1-1 where it stood at halftime. Huskey Jr. scored in the 69th minute to put Centenary ahead 2-1 with the assist credited to Mondragon and then just a few minutes later, Mondragon found the net with Hughes assisting to make it 3-1 Gents at the 73:15 mark. Tarr capped the scoring in the 78th minute with Hughes assisting for a 4-1 lead.

Freshman GK Sebastian Lutin (Fort Worth, Texas) started for the second time in a row for the Gents after making his collegiate debut on Saturday. He played all 90 minutes and made one save.

Centenary, 3-4-1 at home last season, will be playing its first of three-straight home contests as the Maroon and White will square off with MUW on Friday, Sept. 13 and Ouachita Baptist University, a division II program, comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 15.
