Ladies Sit Seventh, Varner in Lead after Day One of Al Jones Memorial

TYLER, Texas - Junior Jessica Varner sits in the lead, while the Centenary Ladies golf team ranks seventh after day one of the Al Jones Memorial at the 5,801 yard, Par-72 Cascades Golf Club in Tyler, Texas.

"We are having more good holes during a round, but a bad hole or two can get in our heads and run up our scores - which is exactly what happened today," explained head coach Emlyn Aubrey. "Practice has been great, but we just need to bring it on tournament days. It's still early in the season, so I am not worried. Once we get focused on a whole round, I feel we will be dangerous."

The Ladies shot a 352 (+64) and are seventh, one shot ahead of McMurry and 42 shots better than Howard Payne. Southwestern leads after a first round of 309 (+21) while host Texas-Tyler is second with a 316 (+28). Hardin-Simmons is third, Schreiner fourth, Cal Lutheran fifth, and Texas Lutheran sixth by 12 strokes ahead of the Ladies.

Varner made six bogeys, three birdies, and nine pars to finish with a 75 (+3) and is tied for the top spot with Valentia Olivieri of Southwestern. Varner leads the field in par-5 scoring (-1) and is the only player to birdie the par-4 first hole.

Junior Taylor Adair is tied for 28th (85, +13), birdieing the 10th and 18th hole. Playing in her first tournament of the season, classmate Erin Rostro fired a 91 (+19). Senior Toni Ficarra is 55th with a +29 (101), while senior Courtney Kale shot a 108 (+36) to rank 58th.

Centenary begins the final round of the Al Jones Memorial Tuesday, September 26, at 8:30 a.m.
