Track & Field Teams Set For Jim Mize Invitational

Ruston, La. - The Centenary men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Jim Mize Invitational this weekend at the Jim Mize Track & Field Complex.

The meet begins on Friday at 3 p.m. and continues on Saturday. The Maroon and White recorded eight top-10 individual performances on Saturday at the Hendrix College Alumni Open in Conway, Ark. in what was their second meet of the season.

Friday's schedule begins with field events at 3 p.m., with the men's and women's hammer and discus throw, followed by the running events at 6:30 p.m., which will include the men's and women's 200m and 5000m races. On Saturday, the field events will begin at 10 a.m. with men's and women's javelin and shot put, followed by the long jump, pole vault, high jump, and triple jump. The running events will begin at noon following a recognition ceremony for LA Tech's senior track and field athletes at 11 a.m. The women's 4x100m will kick off the running events, followed by the men's 4x100m, and conclude with the women's and men's 4x400m. 

Freshman Shinaya Branch (Jonesboro, La.) finished sixth in the women's 400 meters (1:06.12) and freshman Julianna Malloy (Dallas, Texas) placed seventh in the 100 meters (13.99m) last weekend in the Hendrix meet.

The Gents excelled in the men's 100 meters as freshman Randy Levert (New Orleans, La.) ran a time of 11.75 to finish sixth, freshman Lydell Hunter (New Orleans. La.) finished eighth (11.80), and freshman Joshua Ware (Shreveport, La.) was 13th (12.01).

Junior Madison Schonberg (Harbor City, Calif.) finished 10th in the women's discus (26.62m) and 14th in the women's shot put (8.43m). Sophomore Aubrey Salazar (San Antonio, Texas) finished 19th in the discus (19.59m) and 21st in the shot put (7.03m). Senior Veronica Dougherty (McAllen, Texas) finished 24th in the 800 meters (2:48.64) and 26th in the 1500m (5:41.57).

Senior Kevin Brown (New Orleans, La.) finished third in the javelin (38.42m) and earned a top-10 finish in the men's discus (ninth – 28.35m). Junior Xavier Venious (Bossier City, La.) finished third in the 400 meters (52.29). Freshman Eli Melton (Carencro, La.) finished 39th in the 800 meters (2:28.06) and 44th in the 1500m (4:54.36).

Centenary opened its season on March 4 in the Mississippi College Spring Cleaning Meet in Clinton, Miss. The men's foursome of Hunter, Venious, Levert, and Ware ran the 14th-fastest time (43.75) in division III in the 4x 100 relay at the time.

Brown earned a14th-place finish in the javelin (40.35m). Schonberg earned a pair of 16th-place finishes in the discus (25.49m) and shot put (8.44m).

The Jim Mize Invitational began in the late 1980s and is named after long-time LA Tech track coach Jim Mize who coached track and football alongside the legendary coaches Joe Aillet and Maxie Lambright. Mize won three conference championships during his tenure in 1961, 1973, and 1974.
