Varner and Adair All-Conference; Ladies 5th, Gents 6th at SCAC Golf Championships

THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The Centenary Ladies Golf team finished fifth, while the Gents finished sixth after the final round of the 2018 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Tuesday afternoon, April 24. Juniors Jessica Varner and Taylor Adair finished third and fourth to be named First Team All-Conference.

For the women's tournament, both Trinity and Southwestern (668, +92) outpaced third-place Schreiner by nine strokes while the Pirates claimed the team title in a playoff. On the men's side, Southwestern (915, +51) claimed the team title by six strokes over Schreiner (921, +57) and seven strokes ahead of Texas Lutheran (922, +58).

Trailing by three strokes entering, Varner carded the second-best final round with a 78 (+6), a stroke better than her previous round. Starting the day on the 10th, she sat tied for the lead at the turn after eight pars and a birdie on the back nine, but a triple bogey on six and a bogey on nine put Varner one-stroke back for the tournament. Varner led the field in par-3 scoring (2.88, -1) and finished second in birdies (40).

Adair (163, +19) improved by three strokes in round two to move up two spots to finish fourth. She finished the tournament tied for second in par-5 scoring (5.25, +2) and third in the in total pars (20).

The rest of the field for the Ladies all improved by at least seven strokes from round one to the final round. Sophomore Erin Rostro improved by seven strokes, completing round two with a 94 (+22) and a 195 (+51) total to finish 21st. Junior Shannon Orlopp (216, +32) finished 23rd, improving by eight strokes in round two. Senior Toni Ficarra improved by seven strokes and came in 24th with a two-day total of 219 (+34).

On the men's side, sophomore Reed Balcerowicz carded four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth to finish the round with a 79 (+7). Balcerowicz tied for 17th with a three-round total of 235 (+19). Freshman Edvard Granrud shot an 82 (+10) and finished with a 245 (+29) total to place 24th. Freshman Harrison John turned in his best round of the tournament with an 80 (+8) and completing the tournament 26th (252, +36).

Sophomores Taylor Wells and Brodey Warner finished 28th and 29th, respectively, with totals of 266 (+50) and 267 (+51).
