Gents Fall In Heartbreaker At Beloit, 9-8

Beloit, Wisc.  The Centenary lacrosse team was edged 9-8 in a gut-wrenching loss by the Beloit College Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon at Strong Stadium.

The Gents (1-11) led the Buccaneers (2-4) by a score of 8-5 entering the fourth quarter but Beloit scored three goals in a less than two minutes and then Emmet Morgan found the net for the game-winner with just one second on the clock to break the Gents' hearts.

Centenary, which has lost seven games in a row, finished 0-5 on its season-long five-game road trip. Senior A/MF Mark Temple (Houston, Texas) and freshman M Ethan Hewett (Bossier City, La.) each scored three goals to lead the Centenary offensive attack and sophomore A G'Colby Spivey (Dallas, Texas) added two. Sophomore MF Dominic Ogier (St. Louis, Mo.) had two assists, Hewett and Temple each had one, and sophomore MF Seven Davillier (Shreveport, La.) also had one.

Junior Dylan Miller (Shreveport, La.) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Gents and made 15 saves. Eric Seo went the distance in goal for the Buccaneers and made 11 saves. Beloit took 46 shots to the Gents' 40 and finished with a 33-28 edge in ground balls. The Buccaneers went 20-22 on clears while the Maroon and White finished 25-28. Centenary turned the ball over 28 times and Beloit gave it away 29 times. The Buccaneers won 16 of 20 face offs and Centenary won 4 of 20.

Temple gave the Gents an early 1-0 lead at the 11:49 mark of the first period, assisted by Ogier. Spivey scored an unassisted goal in the quarter and Beloit scored twice as it was a 2-2 game after the first 15 minutes of play. Hewett and Temple scored in the second quarter and Beloit scored a pair as the teams went into the halftime break tied at 4-4.

Hewett scored consecutive goals in the third quarter and Temple scored with just over two minutes remaining in the period to give the Gents an 8-4 lead. Beloit's Jordan Rice scored an unassisted goal with 52 seconds left in the quarter to make it 8-5. The Buccaneers' defense then silenced the Gents over the final 15 minutes as Liam Walker scored twice and Will Palmer, assisted by Walker, all scored to tie the game at 8-8 before Morgan's game-winner.

The Gents return home on Sunday, April 7 to finish their season against the Colorado College Tigers in a contest set for 2 p.m. at Mayo Field.
