Varner Captures Third Collegiate Tournament Win, Craig Shoots Low Round of the Tournament

ALEXANDRIA, La. - Ladies junior golfer Jessica Varner captured her third collegiate - and her second consecutive - victory, while freshman Austin Craig led the Gents by firing a 4-under 68, easily the lowest round of the tournament, as both Centenary golf teams took runner-up honors at the Louisiana College Fall Classic Monday and Tuesday, September 18-19.

In winning the tournament, Varner won the last two collegiate competitions she has played in (2017 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in the spring). She also carded a college career best two-round total of 148 (+4).

Second after the first day, the Ladies held firm and finished with a 699 (+123) total, 34 strokes behind LeTourneau. Rounding out the women's field was Howard Payne (+188, 764) and Hendrix (+389, 965).

"The Ladies rebounded nicely today for a solid finish," explained head coach Emlyn Aubrey. "We thought with a good round, we could catch LeTourneau, but they played really well today. Although we had the good round we were looking for, we couldn't catch them. Not suprisingly, Jessie Varner has picked up right where she left off last season with a nice win to start the season."

However, the Gents moved up from third yesterday to finish second at +37 (618). LeTourneau also captured the men's title by 15 strokes, while the Gents knocked Howard Payne to third as it finished with a +42 (623) Belhaven took fourth while host Louisiana College finished fifth.

"The Gents had a bit of a struggle during the first round, but came back today to shoot the lowest round in more than two years," said Aubrey. "Freshman Austin Craig rebounded with a 68 today to also shoot the lowest round for a Gent in three seasons."

In the women's tournament, junior Taylor Adair and sophomore Erin Rostro joined Varner with top-10 finishes. Adair fired an 85, three strokes better than day one, and finished eighth with a total of 173 (+29). Rostro improved by 15 strokes on day two with an 86 and finished 10th with a score of 187 (+47) for the competition.

Senior Toni Ficarra carded her best two-round total in her collegiate career with a 191 (+47).

For the Gents, Craig easily shot a tournament-low round of 68 (-4) to improve by 14 strokes from the first day. He improved 16 places on the day, finishing fifth with a two-round total of 150 (+6).

With Craig, two other Gents recorded top-10 finishes as sophomore Brodey Warner took eighth (151, +7) and classmate Reed Balcerowicz took 10th (152, +8). Sophomore Donald Frazier improved by two strokes and finished with a 160 (+16) while sophomore Taylor Wells finished in a tie for 32nd with a total of 169 (+25).

Competing as an individual, freshman Harrison John shot seven strokes better in round two with a 74, finishing his first collegiate competition at 155 (+11) and in a tie for 15th.

The Centenary Ladies golf team returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, September 25-26, in the annual UT Tyler Al Jones Memorial tournament.
