Bennett Ties For Sixth Place At SCAC Championships

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary men's golf team finished seventh at the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Tuesday as the Gents shot a 99-over par 963 at Riverhill Country Club.

The University of St. Thomas claimed the title as the Celts finished at 20-over par 884, seven shots ahead of second-place Schreiner University (+27 – 891). Trinity University finished third (+33 – 897), Southwestern University placed fourth at 45-over 909, the University of Dallas finished fifth at 49-over 913, Texas Lutheran University finished sixth (67-over 931), 32 shots ahead of the Gents.

Centenary shot a 25-over par 313 in Tuesday's final round, its best of the tournament after the Maroon and White shot a 74-over par 650 on Monday – a 32-over 320 in round one followed by a 42-over par 330 in round two.

Schreiner's Zhao Yung Gu overcame a five-shot deficit to win the individual title, shooting a 1-over par 217 to finish two shots ahead of Trinity's Daniel Nunez and Jonathan Miller of St. Thomas (3-over par 219). Junior Andrew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) was the Gents' top finisher as he finished in a three-way tie for sixth place at 6-over par 222. Bennett fired a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday which was the lowest round shot for the day of all 42 players in the field. Bennett, who tied for 19th at the conference championships last season, now has one runner-up, a pair of top five finishes, and six top-10 finishes in his career. He earned Second-Team All-SCAC honors with his finish on Tuesday. 

Freshman Jeffrey Borchert (Katy, Texas) earned a top-20 finish on Tuesday as he finished 19th after shooting a 15-over par 231. He shot a final-round 3-over par 75 after he shot a 4-over par 76 in round one and an 8-over par 80 in the second round on Monday. Borchert earned his best finish of the season on Tuesday.

Senior Devan Martin (Watson, La.) finished 37th at 41-over par 257. He shot a 13-over par 85 in Tuesday's final round after shooting 79-93 on Monday. Sophomore Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.) finished in a tie for 38th place at 44-over par 260, junior Ricky Blair (Bossier City, La.) tied for 40th place at 45-over par 261, and freshman Hahn Bridges (Sterlington, La.) finished 42nd at 54-over 270.
