Gents Seventh After Opening Round Of UT-Dallas Lidlifter

Kingwood, Texas – The Centenary men's golf team shot a 28-over par 316 on Monday to finish the day in seventh place following round one of the NCAA division III Lidlifter hosted by the University of Texas at Dallas at the par 72, 6,727-yard Clubs of Kingwood Forest.

The Gents, opening their spring season in the event, are back in action for the first time since finishing in 13th place in the abbreviated Crusader Invitational hosted by the University of Dallas back in October in Thackerville, Okla. The Gents' final tournament of the fall was shortened to just 18 holes due to inclement weather. Centenary shot a 45-over par 333.

The host Comets are the round one leader after shooting an 8-over par 296. Hardin-Simmons University is second (+16 – 304), and LeTourneau University is third at 20-over par 208. East Texas Baptist University is fourth (+24 – 312), The Comets' "B" team is fifth (+26 – 314), and Millsaps College is in sixth place just one shot ahead of the Gents (+27 315).  

The Comets' Andrew Chow and LeTourneau's Wes Nolen share the individual lead after each fired a 3-under par 69. Freshman Jeffrey Borchert (Katy, Texas) led the way for the Gents with a 5-over par 77 as he is tied for 16th place. Junior Andrew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) is tied for 20th after shooting a 6-over 78.

Junior Ricky Blair (Bossier City, La.) shot a 7-over par 79 and is in a tie for 29th place, senior Devan Martin (Watson, La.) is tied for 43rd after shooting a 10-over par 82, and sophomore Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.) is in a tie for 61st after an 18-over par 90.

The Gents, playing their third team tournament this season, finished 11th in the Mary Hardin-Baylor Fall Intercollegiate back in September to open their season.

Borchert fired an even-par 70 in the final round to earn the top individual finish for the Gents as he tied for 25th place. The rookie was tied for 44th place after shooting a 6-over par 76 in his collegiate debut and first round of the event. Blair fired a career-low 69 to tie Bennett for 29th place.

St. Thomas is currently in eight place, one shot behind the Gents while Howard Payne is ninth, Mary Hardin-Baylor is 10th, and Belhaven is 11th. The final round will begin on Tuesday morning.
