Softball Swept In DH on Saturday at Schreiner

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary softball team endured a difficult day on Saturday as the Ladies dropped a pair of disappointing games to the Schreiner Mountaineers in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mountaineer Softball Field.

The Ladies (15-18, 8-10 SCAC) lost game one by a score of 11-3 and then fell 9-8 in game two. Schreiner improved to 19-20 overall and 13-7 in conference play with the DH sweep. Centenary led 3-0 entering the fifth inning but Schreiner exploded for 11 runs to take the win. In game two, The Ladies and Mountaineers were tied at 3-3 heading to the seventh inning and then Centenary scored five runs to take an 8-3 lead and just needed three outs to win but allowed Schreiner to score five of its own and tie the game and then the Mountaineers scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off win.

Both teams have already secured spots in the 2021 SCAC Championship which will be played in Kerrville April 30-May 2 with Schreiner serving as the host.

Junior P Ashley Hunter (Benton, La.) started game one and went four innings, allowing just one earned run and three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Four relievers followed her and junior Kirstyn Gomez (Deer Park, Texas) was charged with the loss as she allowed seven runs, all earned, on four hits with three walks in just a third of an innings. Freshman Cambry Bates (Readhimer, La.) came in for Gomez and allowed two earned runs and walked three. Kaylee Culpepper (6-4) pitched all five innings for the Mountaineers to get the win. She allowed three runs, all earned, and six hits with a walk and three K's.

Ladies' freshman right fielder Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.) had a game-high three hits and scored a pair of runs. She also stole a whopping four bases and stole home in the first inning after a leadoff single to score Centenary's first run of the game. Sophomore Kaylea Patridge (Las Vegas, Nev.) and junior Jaymee Wilkinson (Brazoria, Texas) each had RBI singles in the fifth.

Cox continued her big day at the plate in game two as she went 4-5 with a pair of doubles and another stolen base. She went a sizzling 7-8 with five stolen bases, two doubles, and two runs scored for the day. Wilkinson went 3-3 in game two with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored and freshman Isabelle Dominguez (Newark, Calif.) launched a massive three-run homer, her first career long ball, in game two and went 1-2 with four RBI, two runs scored, a sacrifice fly, and a walk. Sophomore CF Mallory Stout (Trinity, Texas) went 1-4 with a triple, a stolen base, and two RBI.

The Ladies stole nine bases on the day and have now stolen an impressive 75 bases this season. The Ladies rank second in the SCAC in stolen bases and rank in the top 15 in the country in division III in the category.

Hunter started game two as well and went seven innings, allowing eight runs, six earned, and eight hits with four strikeouts and nine walks. Gomez relieved her and suffered the loss as she allowed four hits and the winning run. The Mountaineers loaded the bases with no outs on three-consecutive singles and then 1B Sydney Drott delivered a walk-off single.
