Three in a Row! Varner Takes Another Tournament Title, Ladies Improve by 11 Strokes

TYLER, Texas - Centenary junior golfer Jessica Varner continued to make history for the Ladies, finishing the final round by shooting an even-par 72 to take her third consecutive collegiate title at the Al Jones Memorial at the 5,801 yard Cascades Golf Club Tuesday, September 26.

Varner won for the second consecutive year at the Al Jones, firing a personal best 147 (+3) for the tournament. Her 72 for the second round is her lowest collegiate score ever and was low round for the tournament.

"What can I say about Jessie?" said head coach Emlyn Aubrey. "She set out to be number one this year and is right on track for that at this point. This has been a fantastic start to this season."

The Ladies golf team shot a 341 (+53) for the day to finish eighth for the tournament, 21 strokes better than McMurry and 83 ahead of Howard Payne. Fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference-foe Southwestern won the tournament with a 613 (+37), followed by host Texas Tyler. Hardin-Simmons and Cal Lutheran tied for fourth, Texas Tyler's second team took sixth, and Texas Lutheran finished seventh, 16 strokes better than the Maroon and White.

"Again, a nice rebound from round on for the Ladies, but we get so far behind it makes it tough to catch up," said Aubrey. "Some good scores are being posted, but we have to start strong as well as finish strong."

Varner finished the tournament leading in par-5 scoring (-4, one of only two players under par) and with seven birdies. After seven holes, she was +3 for the round and was tied for fourth individually, two strokes behind the leader. However, she responded with four birdies and only one bogey in the final 11 holes to wrap up her fourth collegiate tournament win of her Centenary career.

Varner bested Emily Campbell of Southwestern (150, +6) by three strokes, one stroke better than her margin at the Al Jones last year.

Two other Ladies improved their scores from the first round. Junior Taylor Adair fired an 80 for the day, five strokes better from Monday, and moved up nine spots to finished tied for 19th (165, +21). Sophomore Erin Rostro (17+, +35) finished the day with an 88, three strokes better than round one, and jumped five spots to finish tied for 41st.

Senior Toni Ficara finished both rounds with a 101 to finish +58 and 55th for the tournament. Here 202 matches her best two-round total in a tournament since last fall. Classmate Courtney Kale Shot a 118 in round two and finished +82 (226) to finish 61st.
