Ladies Soccer Blanks Piedmont, 3-0, on Sunday

Shreveport – The Centenary women's soccer team blanked the Piedmont College Lady Lions by a score of 3-0 on Sunday in a non-conference match at a cold and windy Mayo Field.

The Ladies (2-0) have now won 18 of their last 21 matches overall dating back to the beginning of last season and are 10-1 in their last 11 home matches. The shutout was Centenary's first at Mayo Field since a 1-0 victory in overtime on Oct. 4, 2019.

Piedmont dropped to 1-2 on the season as the Lady Lions played their third match in two days. Piedmont defeated LeTourneau earlier in the day on Sunday, 2-1, in Longview. Piedmont dropped a 3-2 match in double overtime to East Texas Baptist on Friday in Marshall.

The Ladies wasted no time getting on the board on Sunday, as sophomore forward Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas) scored five minutes into the match for a 1-0 lead which Centenary would hold at the half. Each team took five shots in the first half with Piedmont taking a pair of corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) played another outstanding game as she recorded her eighth-career shutout and had seven saves. Pitcher's 132 career saves are the third-most in program history in the division III era.

Sophomore forward Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) scored in the 47th minute just after halftime off the assist from junior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) to give the Ladies a 2-0 lead. The goal was the fourth of Bascomb's career. Freshman forward Daisy Acosta (Deer Park, Texas) put the exclamation point on the Ladies' dominating victory as she found the net in the 76th minute for her first-career goal. Acosta blazed up the near sideline and passed the ball off to fellow freshman Hannah Haworth (Shreveport) who fed it back to Acosta for the third Centenary goal of the night.

Centenary will face Mississippi University for Women on the road on Feb. 17 in its final non-conference match before the Ladies open their conference schedule on Feb. 25 at St. Thomas. The Maroon and White then play the first five matches in the month of March at home, beginning with a non-conference match versus Belhaven University on March 2 before their first home conference match against Austin College on March 6.
