Ladies Soccer Remain Undefeated With 4-0 Shutout on Monday

Columbus, Miss. – The Centenary women's soccer team remained undefeated with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Mississippi University for Women Owls in non-conference play on Monday at Spring Mart Field inside the Columbus Soccer Complex.

The Ladies (3-0) scored a pair of goals in each half to cruise to the victory in their first action in 15 days after shutting out Piedmont at home on Feb. 7 in their previous match. Centenary has now outscored the opposition, 9-1, this season and the Ladies have won 19 of their last 22 matches dating back to the beginning of last season and are 9-2 in their last 11 road matches. The Owls dropped to 0-5 with Monday's loss.

The Ladies wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as sophomore midfielder Celeste Muniz (Denton, Texas) scored her first goal of the season and second of her career just 1:34 into the match. Muniz found the net following a corner kick and was assisted by freshman forward Daisy Acosta (Deer Park, Texas). Just over five minutes later, the Ladies struck again as junior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. The goal was McDonald's second of the season and fifth of her career after scoring in the second half of the win over Piedmont on Feb. 7.

Sophomore forward Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas) scored her third goal of the season in the 72nd minute to make it 3-0. Gilbert leads the team in goals this season, scoring one in each match so far. Freshman midfielder Jordyn Ambrose (Allen, Texas) scored the first goal of her young career as she recorded the Ladies' fourth goal of the game in the 83rd minute.

Senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) started and played another solid game for the Ladies as she was on the field for all 90 minutes and made one save. Pitcher earned her eighth career shutout and now has 133 career saves, third-most in program history in the division III era.

The Ladies' stingy defense yielded just four total shots to the Owls in the match. Centenary, meanwhile took 19 shots and 11 shots on goal as they kept a pair of Owls' goalkeepers, Sarah Gilliland and Caitlyn Fox, busy all day. Gilliland started the match, playing 6:56, and allowed the first two goals and made one save before Fox replaced her and played the final 83:04 and gave up two goals and made six saves. Centenary held a 7-1 advantage in shots in the first half and 12-3 after halftime and took nine corner kicks to the Owls' zero.

The Ladies remain on the road this week as they open their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Friday, Feb. 26 at St. Thomas in a match scheduled for 2 p.m. Centenary then plays its first five matches in the month of March at home, beginning with a non-conference match versus Belhaven University on March 2 at 5:30 p.m. before the Ladies play their first home conference match against Austin College on March 6 at 6 p.m.

The Ladies then host Mississippi University for Women in a rematch on March 9 at 5 p.m. and square off with the University of Dallas (March 13) at 3:30 p.m. and Schreiner (March 20) at 2 p.m. in consecutive weeks at home in SCAC play.
